Why We Built The Backcountry Cottonwoods GORE-TEX Shell Bib Pant
"These shell bibs have every box checked. From waterproof protection to eco-friendly materials, there's no reason for me to wear anything else at the resort. Even with the updated GORE-TEX fabric, I can tell the shell is just as tough as always." —Gearhead® Expert Alex
Whether we're getting the goods off Great Western on a pow day or seeking out sidehits in Minny Basin come springtime, the Backcountry Cottonwoods GORE-TEX Shell Bibs have us covered with waterproof, breathable performance in a earth-friendly design for big days at the mountain. We made this pair of shell bibs intentionally with an updated, PFAS-free* 2-layer GORE-TEX membrane to keep winter's worst at bay, along with robust features such as inner thigh vents for quick cooldowns, inseam gusset for added mobility, and a ton of pockets to keep essentials close at hand. Our favorite new feature is the self-adhering bib straps: with limited hardware to slow us down or make us uncomfortable, we still dial in the perfect fit for a full day on the hill.

Odd sizing

The material construction seems great for these bibs, but the sizing and shape seems off. I wear a medium in pretty much everything, shirts, jackets, pants, etc. (5’9” 175 lbs) These bibs are nice and comfortably roomy in the legs, but tight around the butt, and really tight around the torso. I couldn’t get the bibs to zip all the way up the side. Additionally, I was afraid to squat in these as I did not want to tear the rear open at the seams. I understand the appeal of a tight and form fitting apparel, but usually this is best with items that stretch. These bibs do not stretch, and due to their fit they resist your overall mobility. This is specifically bothersome when touring in the backcountry, when a full range of body contortions is used for both ascending, descending, digging pits, and everything else. Perhaps moving up a size will help out. If the fit in the butt and torso was a little more roomy, they’d be bomber.

They say they run small but I’m a large in everything else except these. I’m a medium in these, they run pretty long but the fit was spot on. 3 stars because I sized up like the description told me and now I have to pay to return them and most importantly another week I’m not shredding because I don’t have warm pants. 😢

This bib checks all the boxes and is an absolute steal at $239. The features and construction of these bibs easily warrant $450-$500. However, whoever tailored the dimensions on these had to be high. I am 6'0 and 205 pounds, wear 36x32 pant and 44 jacket (solidly within the Large size category based on the size chart). The waist and length on these bibs were spot on, however the bib actually tapers up from the waist to the torso to the point I couldn't even zip the side zips. I measured the width of the bib and it is 41.5 inches at the chest/underarms, completely nonsensical for a 36 to 38 inch waist. I wanted to love them, just couldn't fit into them.
