Why We Built The Backcountry Cottonwoods GORE-TEX Shell Jacket
"I've never seen a path through the trees I didn't love. Durability is the most important quality I look for in my gear, and the Cottonwoods Jacket has been my go-to season after season." —Gearhead® Expert Cameron
We updated our bestselling hardshell with an ultra-soft lining that pairs perfectly with the Backcountry Cottonwoods GORE-TEX Shell Jacket's burly construction. We built the jacket with a PFAS-free* GORE-TEX ePE 2-layer membrane to provide reliable waterproofing and high-performance breathability while we're hitting the send button off the biggest cliffs at the resort. The jacket comes fully equipped with an adjustable powder skirt, ergonomic stretch wrist gaiters, and angled underarm vents to maximize our comfort in the mountains, and the convertible half-drop hood shields us from the wind on blustering bluebird days.

Cottonwood snow jacket

I've used this jacket a few times now. And I really do love it! I like that the chest pockets are deep. So if you put something in them, and forget to zip it closed, nothing will fall out too easily. It has a double zipper ! So rare in rain/snow jackets nowadays. What I am most happy with; is that the inner liner isn't 'welded' to the outside. This allows it to move as you do. Without feeling like you are 'stuck' to the inside of the jacket. I did have a bit of a problem with the front zipper in that when I try to unzip all the way it sometimes binds...Not a real issue over all. I am 5'8" and 145#. I got the small based on their size chart. It fits perfectly. HOWEVER. If I was 5' 10" and 160# .A small would be way too tight.,

Quirky shell that I plan to use, but...

Four stars might be generous, but I like this jacket despite some quirky design choices. If I had paid full price, I might have returned it, but at 40% off, I don't mind doing some DIY with a scissors. PRO: Good hard shell (but not heavy). Some people might not care for how stiff it is, but I like it. Comfortable (after removing silly "powder skirt," see below) More storage/bigger pockets than any other jacket I've ever had (including interior mesh pockets on *both* sides) Two-way main zipper--an absolute must if your selling long jackets to short skiers Wrist gaitors--cozy Beautiful royal blue color CON: Strange implementation of powder skirt based on super-tight elastic strap that strangles your stomach. Resort skiers like me seldom see deep pow, so I went ahead and cut the whole thing out. Ahhhhh, that's better! Logos, I can live with, but the huge "Backcountry.com" billboard on the back of the left arm is just an insult. The off-white lettering is rubberized, but I think it will accept black magic marker to make it at least a little less conspicuous. Rubber coating on ends of zipper pulls might be functional but looks too much like tassles. I cut off the ends and replaced them with plain snap-on pulls. (Even the tiniest cords have "backcountry.com" printed on them. Sheesh.) JURY STILL OUT: The underarm zippered vents are about twice as long as any I've seen before, but the width of the opening is severely restricted by mesh fabric (to keep powder out, of course). I'll need to gain some more experience before deciding about cutting the mesh out. The long, oddly-angled zipper requires two separate tugs at different angles (I change hands) to open or close all the way, but I can adapt to that if the cooling is effective.

Does not live up to expectations
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Last season I bought a set of Cottonwods bibs and jacket for my wife. And those were great: 3 layer gore-tex membrane, rugged and tough shell material, full powder skirt, great overall design and colours. I liked it more than my topmost TNF Summit series Tsirku set and decided to buy Cottonwods for myself. Unfortunately last season collection was already sold out, so I had to wait for a new one. I didn't expect any improvements. Last year models were already almost a masterpiece. But what I really didn't expect that a great product will be ruined. - Rugged material is replaced with a thin and soft recycled cloth - Poor quality zippers which do not match every second time you wan't to close them, making impossible to zip up the jacket. I bet those won't last a year. - Interior pocket is replaced with a piece of mesh - 1/3 of powder skirt is replaced with a rubber band - No windproof pad under the zipper - Convertible half-drop hood instead of integrated one - Overall bad design and weird colours. Huge logo on the sleeve.
