"The fabric on this baselayer is so soft and light I almost forget it's even there. But when the wind starts howling, I'm so grateful for the extra layer of protection." —Gearhead® Expert Sam
We ask a lot of our baselayers, and the Backcountry Pines Microgrid Ultra-Lt Baselayer 1/4-Zip Top delivers on all fronts. This form-fitting baselayer is warm, moisture-wicking, and odor-resistant to keep us comfortable, whether we're deep in the backcountry or carving down groomers at the resort. The ultralight microgrid material features a heavy dose of stretch, so we can make quick pivots at the drop of a hat and dance through the trees at lightning speed. The quarter-zip design lets us circulate cool air after a run down the moguls, and thumbholes keep our sleeves in place while we work up steep skintracks.

Thin Fabric
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- XS
This is a thin microgrid fleece of good quality that I got for my wife. It has it's place but the $100 MSRP is an absolute joke. I caught this at a closeout price of $25 and it was a good deal at that price. I wouldn't pay anything over $50.

Really nice lightweight warmth

This is a versatile layer that reminds me a little of the R.5 weight that Patagonia used to have, although it is even lighter than that. I am a huge fan of microgrid fleece. Warmth for weight of this top is stellar. The main issue with it is that it seems like it’s supposed to be a first layer, but it has too many uncomfortable seams for that (I totally don’t get the point of the under bust seams in particular) so I wear it over a very synthetic baselayer. Sizing is slightly bigger than XS usually is in Backcountry, so folks who complain about tight arms, etc. will probably like this top better, but that makes the fit worse for a true XS like me who is just a little too big/adult-shaped to fit into kid’s sizes. The other thing I would change about this top is I’d rather have raglan sleeves. But for the sale price I cannot complain. No data on durability yet but it seems like it would be pretty sturdy under reasonable circumstances.

Wore this on a fall hike today and I was BEYOND impressed with its temperature regulation. Going uphill in the sun was hot and down in the shade was very cold, and I was the perfect temp in this the whole time. It also is not smelly after the hike like most synthetic baselayers would be. Can’t wait to try it out skiing this winter
