Why We Built The Backcountry Wolverine Cirque Insulated Pant

"These insulated pants were made for the backcountry, but they slip into my multi-sport wardrobe with ease. Basically anywhere I need some extra warmth, these pants go with me." —Gearhead® Expert Jessie

Some days we just need tights under our shells, but when temperatures at the resort drop, we rock the Backcountry Wolverine Cirque Insulated Pant under our snow pants. These warm layering pants boast Primaloft Gold Active insulation that traps heat while releasing moisture, full-length 2-way zippers on each leg that allow us to control our personal climate as temperatures fluctuate, and a 3/4-length that sits just above our ski or snowboard boot for coverage and comfort. While all this boosts our comfort on hill, we really love that the nylon and fleece combination offers an aprés-ready look that lets us go straight from pow turns to the evening festivities.

Long live the puffy pants!

These pants are awesome. Just wore them in 0’degrees (wind chill of -12F) while working a ski race. The only part of my body that didn’t get cold was my legs. Sure the draw string sucked, but everything else works great. Long live the puffy pants!

Ruined last year's version

Last year's model was nearly perfect, only issues were that the fit was a bit overly generous and for whatever reason there was no way to tighten the waist band. This year, it seems they've made the fit even more generous and stuck with the purely symbolic waistband. More importantly though, they added giant zippers on the side which seems like a great idea...until you actually try the pants on. To their credit, they seem to have sourced what has to be the highest quality zipper ever attached to a mid-layer garment, kudos there; but that also seems to be the source of the problem. The zipper is so "beefy" that it is incredibly stiff and prevents the material in the leg from moving like normal clothing. Combine that with the lack and any ability to tighten the waistband and you end up with the leg zippers kind of folding out on themselves resulting in pants that look like hugo boss made them for your ww2 military. The zipper idea is really solid, the ability to take them off without removing you shells is great, but I have to wonder if the team actually tried these on before putting them into production. Backcountry, last years version was so close to perfection and I love the commitment here to high quality materials, but for next year please either go back to the zipperless approach or put in a more flexible zipper and for goodness sake put in a non-decorative waistband.

I had to order a new pair of these. Compared to a season ago these are inferior. The fit is similar but it’s the full size zippers and missing fly for quick bathroom trip that is making me return them. I suggest to backcountry to bring back the zipper less design.

Weird fit

I got these for an insulation layer underneath shell pants for skiing. The short length is good, it does not interfere with the ski boots. The insulation was good for the moderately cold conditions I was in. The fit is weird though, they are baggy around the thighs. Like jodphurs. This didn't matter for my intended use, since I wear them under shell pants. The waist is a little stretchy, but there is no drawstring due to the complications of the design which has full length zippers on each side. There is stitching that looks like a fly, but it is not functional. These would be better if there was a functional fly, and they would be perfect if also the fit was more "normal".

I live in the Upper Midwest and we nomally have some frigid temps. Used these both Nordic Skiing and Ice Climbing. They are fantastic. Didn't over heat or freeze after sweaty exertions. Well made with great features.

I've been riding the Wolverine Cirque Insulated Pants for a few weeks now and they are officially my favorite base-layer ever! They keep me warm on cold days and, best of all, don't get too hot when I'm charging hard. The only thing that could make these better would be drawstrings or some form of adjustable waist. Overall super comfortable and very functional!

No Drawstring?!

Received these pants the other day in preparation for ski season to wear under my bibs on cold days. The quality and fit seems appropriate, though there is no drawstring (or beltloops) to tighten the pant. If you're not the exact size of the pants, there will be some sliding or riding of the waist up or down as you move. It seems crazy to not have built in belt loops or a tie draw string, those little details matter!

Fit is weird, quality is top notch

I'm returning these because of some exceedingly common fit issues I have with Backcountry clothing lately. I ordered according to my waist measurement in the size chart and it felt accurate to me after trying them on. I immediately noticed the main issue with the fit on these when crouched, sat down, and walked up some stairs. The pants basically pull the back side of themselves down any time I moved around. I'm 6'3" (192 cm) 180 lbs (82kg) with a 33" (84 cm) waist and ordered a size Medium. Being a cyclist I'd consider my lower body to be fairly muscular, but I wouldn't really consider my legs/butt to be body builder huge. I felt like the length on these when standing straight was perfect with them falling just below the knee, but maybe it would be worth trying a size up when I return these at the warehouse. TLDR: If you order based on the size chart and have even a slightly above average butt (not flat), these will probably pull themselves down every time you move. Other than that, made from quality materials and bummed they don't work for me. I'll try to update this review if sizing up works out. I hope this can help some people out with figuring out sizing and maybe Backcountry can make some improvements to these in the next iteration.
