Why We Like The Blacktail 3 Tent

When we're spending a few days exploring the places where the deer and the antelope play, we bring the Big Agnes Blacktail 3 Tent along for some extra company. While it sleeps three people, the Blacktail weighs just six pounds fully packed, so it's not like carrying your little sister around in your pack (the Blacktail doesn't complain when it gets hungry, either).

The Blacktail has plenty of features to make your backcountry nights a little more comfortable. The polyester fabric of the fly and floor sports fully sealed seams to keep out rain and sneaky moisture, the mesh walls allow for plenty of air to circulate on warm summer nights, and we really love that the dual doors and matching vestibules help you avoid trampling your tent mates and keep your boots and pack dry.

Love the roominess

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I am a new backpacker who made my first trip in an REI Trailmade. It felt very confined inside with my wife and myself. When I was searching for something more roomy I found the Mountain Hardwear Mineral King and Backcountry had a great price. The Mineral King has a ridge pole that makes a tremendous difference in holding the sides nearly vertical which makes it easy for two adults to sit inside at the same time without feeling confined. We also love the huge doors that store simply in a stash pocket. Finally, we just think this is a great looking tent. We got a Big Agnes Blacktail 3p for comparison and it was bigger, but the looks, big doors and roominess inside made us pick the Mountain Hardwear Mineral King. We have taken it on two trips and are thrilled with our choice. We use a Big Agnes Rapide SL Insulated Tent Floor Pad which is 50” wide tapering to 40”. It fits nicely and the taper makes the corners near our feet good places to store gear that we want handy.

Buyer beware

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I'm a motorcycle traveler and been on the road for 4 years and gone through as many tents, this one the zipper went out in less than 5 months and customers service won't help me! Cannot recommend at all!!!

Blacktail Series

The Blacktail two, three, and four-person tents are light enough for the backcountry, and strong enough for the front country. A tried and true shelter with excellent value for backpackers who want a super comfortable tent after a long day on the trail. The Blacktail series of tents offers spacious sleeping areas with easy access through two, side-entry doors and vestibules, making early morning entry and exit with a tent-mate more stealth when nature calls.

Took this car camping in Lake Tahoe mid-October. No condensation, and got pretty cold at night. Fit my 5'9 boyfriend and myself, 5'6, very comfortably. We could probably have fit a dog in too, but we used the extra space on the sides for our clothes. Great pockets up top and along the sides. Highly recommend!
