Why We Like The Copper Spur HV3 Expedition Tent
When we need the burliest tent for miles around, we bring along the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV 3 Expedition Tent. This beefed-up, take-anywhere version of the Copper Spur HV UL series is ready for the toughest conditions on the planet, from base camp snow storms to windswept ridges. It features larger diameter poles and bomber architecture, built to handle mountain winds and shuddering snow loads, while still providing plenty of living space as you wait out the storm.
Big Agnes equipped the HV 3 Expedition with easy-grip zipper pulls and glove-friendly toggles, letting you set the tent up even in frigid conditions. It also includes a large closable ceiling window, accessible from inside, for storing wet gear without adding condensation to the interior. Two doors give everyone inside equal access to the great outdoors, while the double vestibules provide plenty of storage space for climbing or ski gear. The main body of the tent uses a breathable nylon ripstop to trap warmth, but optional mesh windows on the doors can be opened when you or your partners need to vent.

Really great tent
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
Had this tent 3 years now. It's been through a 4-day winter storm on a glacier, high winds, rain in the summer, etc. It is a fantastic mountaineering tent, especially great for winter camping. My only issue is that it is listed as a 3-person tent. Maybe in the summer you could fit 3 but it would be squishy. With winter gear and sleeping bags, it's very much a 2-person tent. Otherwise, here are the pros: Very easy to set up, everything is colour coded, and once you've done it a few times 2 people can set it up in 60-90 seconds or so. Steep walls on the inside make it great for tall people, or staying away from condensation at the head and toe, also good for shedding snow. Sufficient venting options for winter camping. The best feature in my mind is the two-vestibule design, laid along side the sleeping position, not at the head and foot. This means each side can dig a little footwell in the snow, each person has lots of room for gear, and you have your own way in an out without climbing over your partner. Brilliant. There are glove-friendly tabs on all the zippers. It held up really well in a storm, 4 days of constant winds and 80 cm total snow acc., did not have issues with sides collapsing, roof deforming, etc. Mine weighs 2990 grams all packed, but it does not feel flimsy or cheaply built. I guess if you were heading to Denali you'd want something a bit burlier, but this is basically the perfect ski touring tent for 2.
