I would recommend not purchasing anything from backcountry.com. I received a defective product with extra fabric on the sleeve hanging off. I wanted to return the item and it took a long process to get it resolved. Instead of refunding me to my original payment method, they are giving me a time limited store credit. First they told me that I had been refunded and when I contacted them again, they told me that I actually had not been refunded and there was an error.

Great sun hoody

I climb a lot and wanted to try the alpenglow pro after my alpenglow hoody had been loved to death. It is a little bit slimmer than the alpen glow but is very breathable. I would completely recommend it!

My favorite sun hoodie

I've used the Alpenglow Pro for a few seasons now, and I'm a big fan. It's perfect for climbing, with a nice stretchy hood that fits perfectly over a helmet. The material isn't superlight, but it's reasonably light, and the extra features really make this hoody shine. It's not as light and airy as something like the OR Echo, but that's a benefit as well - you can get a bit of insulation from this sun shirt, while it also dumps heat using mesh panels at the armpits. The front zip allows for some ventilation, making it a decent shirt for running if it isn't too hot out. The only downside to the Alpenglow Pro is that the material doesn't perform very well in humid environments. But here in Colorado, it's just about as perfect as a sun hoodie can get. That's why I also bought one for my girlfriend!

Too heavy. Too much stretch.

A little heavier than expected and very stretchy material. I can’t think of a reason to construct an entire piece with this amount of stretch to it. Maybe certain panels, but not the entire garment. Also seems to run a bit large, but that could be from the sag allowed by, you guessed it, too stretchy material.

Alpenglow Pro Shines like the Alpenglow on your Summit Approach

I have purchased two of these for the past year of guiding, and have been thoroughly impressed. I developed a tear that worried me due to the stretchy nature of the fabric, and I did not think that it would hold a patch well. However, after a year of abuse, the small tear has not grown any larger! The only con that another expert has mentioned is that this fabric is quite hot and heavy when soaked in a humid/rainy environment.

Versatile go-to

Protects from strong sun, can release some heat with Quarter zip - chest pocket is handy for loose items. Can Recommend.

Love this dun hoodie. I bought two!! The octane isn't at all red. I bought it for the alpine but is for more orange than anything

Great unless it is humid

I absolutely loved my alpenglow hoodie when it first came in. I was looking for something with a hood but also a form of mechanical ventilation that would protect me from the sun. The half zip and mesh material in the armpits did just that. The first 3-4 trips I took it on it performed flawlessly! A recent trip in southern VA on the AT revealed its achilleas heal. Humidity. The fabric does a good job of facilitating evaporation in most conditions, but when the humidity gets high enough and it cannot keep up with the the amount I sweat and it becomes a very heavy and is no longer comfortable. I realize that anything is going to get completely saturated in those conditions, but my disappointment was in how much water it retained. A thinner fabric (like OR's Astroman, or Echo fabric, or Patagonia's Capilene fabric, or MH Crater Lake) doesn't seem to retain quite as much water / sweat, and therefore doesn't get as heavy. I will still use my Alpenglow in dry environments. I absolutely loved it when I was doing some hiking in Colorado, but it will never come with me again on an AT trip or anywhere where I expect humidity (most east coast hiking).

Extremely comfortable, feels great against

Extremely comfortable, feels great against the skin. Nice and cool too. Does not handle abrasion at all and is heavy.
