ATC - Alpine Guide

Alpinists reveled in rappelling, belaying, and using the ATC's guide mode so much that Black Diamond designed its classic belay device with a lighter, more compact device. Compared to the original ATC Guide, the Black Diamond ATC - Alpine Guide accommodates skinnier ropes so you can alpine climb with twin ropes a little easier. Apart from that, it features the same handling as the original, just for skinnier ropes.

Ice climbing

Great ATC for ice climbing and mountaineering. Holds those smaller ropes tighter and more secure.

The classic

These things are amazing. Multi functional and last forever. The only reason I am replacing mine is due to me losing it!

Classic

Classic belay device - recommend 100%, though I'm a new climber. A more experienced climber told me that the ATC wears down in the corners in time, and can damage your ropes. Still recommend - just keep an eye on it and replace when it's time

Best all around guide plate for skinny ropes

It just works well if you are trained to use it in all modes. Belay from below, belay from above, belaying two climbers and expedient haul ratchet for short ascents and raises.

This ATC does exactly what it's meant to. I trust my life with it, I trust someone else's life on it. It can take falls and a ton of use with little no showing of use. It's easily identifiable in relation to my larger ATC/belay device. Having this alpine gives me so many more options when it comes to rope diameters, and when you're working with large or small diameters, it's crucial to have the options.

Great for ski patrol!

I use this alpine ATC for ski patrol on Crystal Mtn and while I haven’t had to use it for real self evac situations off the lift, I I I have been using it a lot for training and it works great with the 6mm rope we use here at Crystal! Definitely recommend this for all you adventurers!

The Alpine Guide is lighter than the regular Guide, but not by enough for it to really matter. If you're truly counting every ounce for alpine trekking, this may be worth the buy, but in general I'd just suggest a Guide.
