Camalot Z4

Black Diamond continues to lead the charge on innovating camming devices. First there was the original Camalot, which still continues to be regarded as the gold standard of camming devices everywhere, and then they started lightening things up with the C3, X4, and current Ultralight models. Now, the Camalot Z4 replaces the X4 as Black Diamond's most technically advanced camming device specialized for smaller cracks like the splitters in Indian Creek, or even if you're going light and fast in the Bugaboos. Black Diamond designed the Z4 range of Camalots with BD's top trad athletes to ensure everything any climber could ever want in a cam. Finally, climbers can now squeeze a single-stemmed camming device without the stem bending over, and not just that, every different size has the same flex for a consistent performance. The heads are narrower than previous Camalots as well, and they're easier to place and clean in tighter constrictions. Black Diamond sandblasted the lobes for better holding power, and added a new Dynex sling with a unique colorway that's easier to pick out in a rack full of older Camalots.

Narrow head, double axel

Micro cams are the subject of heated discussion, but the Z4 is the clear winner in the 0. 3 size. Flexible stem and double axel with a narrow head width ticks all the boxes. When I sold my previous generation C4s and started carrying WC and DMM cams, the Z4s somehow stayed on my rack. I've fallen on a 0. 2 Z4 as the first piece off the belay with about 10' of rope in the system and it held with no signs of damage.

Super versatile cam

These small cams are great, the . 1 and . 2 can fit in tiny fingertip cracks and are pretty narrow so can fit in relatively shallow areas. The . 3 and above are double axle design, and have a bit more expansion range than the . 3 C4 - and also a narrower head which makes them easy to place in somewhere like Eldo with many weird non-splitter seams.

Gear I Trust

I am working on building a double rack of cams with Wild Country Friends and BD Z4s, and I have to say I prefer how small and easy to place these cams are. They also are less prone to walking because of their flexible stem design which is also confidence inspiring when I’m climbing.

Z4

What can you say? It just works. The narrow head fits in tight placements and the trigger is nice.

.3-.75 are Great Tcu’s are alright

I love these cams from .3-.75 they excel at pocket and weird deep placements, my only gripe is that i wish i had more. The Tcu’s on the other hand are not my favorite. My biggest issue is the amount of force required to fully retract the cams. I’ve used aliens and wild country zeros before and they are just better in the .2-0 sizes.

Great cam so far

I got the larger sizes to supplement my older C4s. They are a little smaller for the tight placements than the equivalent C4 and more flexible for horizontal placements. They also tend to walk less.
