Why We Like The Black Diamond Dawn Patrol Hybrid Shell Jacket
The Dawn Patrol Hybrid Shell is Black Diamond's backcountry-specific ski jacket that feels equally comfortable on the uphill as it does on the downhill, especially when it's powdery out there. Its BD.dry membrane is extremely waterproof, breathable, and even windproof. Black Diamond also added GTT's Empel Breathable Water Protection Technology, which is a water- and PFC-free DWR that's more durable and performs better than the competition. Softshell paneling provides extra breathable and a four-way stretch in key areas to keep comfy on the skin track.

Solid ski touring jacket
Comfortable free ride contour fit. Fairly lightweight, stretchy fabric that maintains waterproofing, and great features like armpit vents and a secondary zipper with a mesh vent all the way up the chest.

I initially liked the Dawn Patrol shell when I received it in January 2024. I was looking for a waterproof winter shell to complement my trusty Patagonia GoreTex jacket, which I’ve used for several years. At first, the Dawn Patrol seemed durable and did a good job repelling snow. However, when I used the jacket again in November 2024—after only a few weeks of total use—it had already lost its water-repelling ability. I tried reapplying a fresh layer of DWR, which helped slightly, but the jacket still let water through during long, snowy hikes when snow accumulated on the surface. What disappointed me even more was the customer support experience. When I reached out, their advice was to reapply DWR again or send the jacket in at my own expense. They’d review it in 3 to 5 weeks to see if anything could be done. While these responses weren’t completely unreasonable, they felt below par, especially given the competitive market for outdoor gear. In comparison, my 8-year-old Patagonia jacket still performs better than this one, even after years of heavy use. Unfortunately, I can't recommend the Dawn Patrol shell or Black Diamond based on my experience. There are simply better, more reliable options available.

Sleeves too long
I am between a L and XL. 6’1 202Lbs. L was too small w a puff vest and transceiver and XL I have to roll back sleeve an inch. Otherwise lightweight and easily pacckable.

Great shell
To be fair this is my first shell designed for touring but I love it, well thought out features for ease of use and functionality.

Amazing!
I bought this because I needed something last minute for a trip. This jacket has been beyond amazing. It's lighter and way more stretchy than my previous jacket. I even used it in a SAR op recently and it kept all the dampness out.

Nicely made, loads of features. As previously mentioned, soft shell panels on the back and under the arms are not waterproof. So, this is a jacket for fair weather and spring ski tours.

Great light jacket
Bought this jacket for a spring backpacking trip when temps range from 30’s to 50’s. This jacket served great as an outer shell in the cool weather. Very comfortable and flexible with great ventilation. Only con is the position of the pockets. The pockets are located in your breast rather than at your side. Overall great jacket for autumn and spring time trips
