Why We Like The Black Diamond First Light Stretch Hooded Jacket
Most of our Gearhead Experts prefer synthetic midlayers for our active outdoor endeavors—layering pieces like Black Diamond's First Light Stretch Hooded Jacket. This jacket's Primaloft Gold insulation is almost as light and packable as down, but its synthetic construction deals with heat and sweat much better than down, which loses its loft and insulating capacity when it's wet. This high-performance hoodie holds in our body heat while breathing and resisting moisture when our high-out put hikes, climbs, and ski tours crank up our body's thermostat. The First Light also features plenty of stretch to move with us when we're ripping, shredding, or reaching for a hold, and its helmet-compatible hood complements our climbing, mountaineering, and ski kits.

Buyer beware! Do not purchase. I wish the other one-star review had been posted before I purchased this jacket. Avoid the hassle of having to return this. It started pilling significantly across the entire back of the jacket after just 2 uses. Build quality on seams was poor as well, as noted by the other reviewer. This was a hassle. I bought this jacket to replace a Black Diamond Access LT jacket from 2016 I've loved and lived in daily for nine years. I was hoping for another decade of service from a high-quality brand. This experience has put me off Black Diamond for the time being. Pilling was substantial and quickly spread from lumbar region to much of the back and the shoulders (where backpack straps rest). I used this just in casual urban biking for a week or two. Pilling seemed to be part of a broader fabric quality problem, since the fabric would catch and pull on any abrasion -- including, ironically, rough hands from climbing. Super super disappointing. How did this pass QC?

I have been an avid black diamond fan for 10+ years, I have BD crampons, tents, ski bindings, backpacks, AVY gear, climbing gear and on and on and on. I bought this jacket in October 2024, within two months of light use it began pilling. Some of the seams (still intact) started coming loose with strands of thread coming loose. To think that I spent $300 on a this and it is pilling on me in higher use areas like the chest and shoulders is just a sign of how their equipment is going downhill. This is not just my opinion but the opinion of many of my fellow outdoor enthusiasts as well. I have had similar primaloft-type stretch insulated jackets from Patagonia Arc'teryx OR and Klattermussen last 7+ years of season after season of beatdowns without any pilling or material breakdown. I use this more as semi-daily coat in winter, I've used in on 1-3 light ski tours, 1 week long bikepacking trip, 1-2 days of sport climbing and a few winter MTB rides and it's breaking down in less than a 1/2 of a year. To spend $300 on a jacket like this and have it already start to fall apart is a joke. I recommend looking elsewhere. Wait for a sale to buy a better quality jacket from a different brand for the same $300 price listed here.
