Runs HUGE
Read some reviews that these run large. It's huge. I'm 5'11", more torso than leg, 245 pounds with a 42" chest and a 40" waist. Dress shirt is a 17.5" neck and 34/35 sleeve. I usually wear an XLT t-shirt or polo. The sizing wizard recommended I order this jacket in a 2XL. I ordered this in an XL because reviews indicated it runs a bit large, and that tall sizes were excessive in the sleeve length. The XL is more than long enough in the sleeve. The length of the body ends a few inches below my belt line. The chest and waist have enough extra room to fit the comforter off my bed as a base layer. It's excessive. I feel like I could fit two of me in this jacket. I'll be returning it for a Large. To summarize, I wear an XLT, the sizing wizard recommended a 2XL, and I'll fit comfortably in a L. Sizing aside, it's not a softshell. Softshell is generally a specific type of material which this definitely differs from. If you're used to a softshell pant or jacket that feel more like shark skin, this is not that. It's not a fleece. It's not a thin gore-tex-like shell. But it's not what you think of when someone says softshell. I can't say whether it blocks wind or repels water yet as I'm returning the one which just arrived. Construction wise I think it's akin to any and every other Columbia product I've owned. It's good. Inner liner is fleece and feels cozy. Overall insulation is light, which is exactly what I was going for. I have a mid-weight base layer, fleece mid layer, and gore-tex shell for cold days on the slopes. I want this for the warmer, sunny days when the fleece is too much, but a mid-weight under a shell is too little.

Good jacket, almost great
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Good jacket- many say it runs a size up but I got my normal one- loose cut but it fits my shoulders and chest well. Very warm for its weight, at least to me. Only thing I don't love is the hood. It has cinches at the collar at the neck, really wish it had one on the back- either a toggle or just a velcro adjustment like a lot of their other jackets. Then it would get 5 stars from me.
