Why We Like The Columbia Silver Ridge Utility Convertible Pant

Temperatures change, but our love of the trail does not, so we slip into the Columbia Silver Ridge Utility Convertible Pant for multi-season adventures. These pants offer full coverage, wicking power, and three styles in one. Full-length pants have roll tabs at the cuffs to adjust the shape to a mid-calf length, and if that's not enough, zip off the legs from the knee down for an airier feeling.

Just barely good enough! Finally!

I have these pants from ~2010 and loved them for many years, but they are a little too small now since I've gained some weight. I have been wearing the men's version since 2018 when I decided that I absolutely needed cargo pockets big enough for my wallet and phone to hike the Camino de Santiago. I've gone through about 3 pairs of the men's version since then, thanks to increasingly shoddy construction, and finally decided to give the women's version another go. I'm a true size 14 in every other brand, so I bought the 16 (the biggest non-plus-size size they make) and crossed my fingers, and they fit! They fit extremely snugly, but I expect them to stretch in the waist with wear. Now let's talk pockets. There is one cargo pocket with a velcro closure that is big enough for a wallet and/or phone. Why one, when the men have two, and one of the men's has a zipper? And in exchange for this one luxury, they have removed the left butt cheek pocket. There is also a pocket with no closure whatsoever on the back of the right thigh. It is technically just big enough for my phone, but I don't foresee ever using it since its contents would immediately be in a creek. There is also a small zipper pocket inside the right hip pocket that I guess you could store extra cash in if you expect to get mugged? The strangest part to me is that every version (men's and women's) of these I've owned before is nylon, and these are 100% polyester, yet make all the same claims about the fabric being "omni-cool," "omni-wick," "omni-shade," whatever. I expect them to be pretty uncomfortable in hot or humid conditions. Other than the fit and looking slightly less like a grungy backpacker, the part I was most looking forward to about switching back to the women's version was the little snappy-do that on my 2010 pants let me convert them to capri length. These have the snappy-do, but it allows you to roll the pants up....drumroll....one inch from the bottom hem. Huh? Why? TL;DR I will be keeping these because the fit is much more flattering than the men's and the pocket situation is adequate, I suppose. Buy one full size up.

Just what I wanted for summer hiking

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used these convertible pants on a three day backpacking trip. I liked having a zippered pocket and a side pocket on the thigh with a velcro closure. The legs were easy to unzip when it got warm out. The legs are a bit fussy to zip unto the shorts again while you are wearing them, but worked just fine. The fabric is lightweight which is what I want in a summer hiking pant. The sizing seemed true to size.

Size up

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Fit is a little off for sizing. Ordered a size 8 but it was loose in the waist, tight in the thighs and made climbing , bending, squatting on hikes uncomfy. The pockets are tiny so they don’t even hold the small basic tactical gear I wanted in my pockets

Strange pocket

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Pretty good fit. Could use additional snap at the waist. Fabric could be a bit more stretchy. Strange long and narrow pocket not much use. Only one small zipper pocket inside a larger open pocket. Liked the pocket configuration for the Men's version of these pants better.

NO STRETCH, SIZE UP IF YOU DON'T SKIP LEG DAY

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Good quality. Very quick drying after getting wet, however, not stretchy at all so don't expect that. Recommend sizing up if you're second guessing sizing (just because there's no stretch). They are tight in the thigh on me, but I have larger than average quads. I also wish there were more pockets - why do men get so many more pockets than women? I will be keeping and wearing because they are good pants, just want a little stretch and more pockets.

Nice hiking pants, but runs small

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Nice quality pants. Compared to other "zip-off" hiking pants brands I own, the shorts on these pants are slightly longer, ending just above my knees. Like some other reviewers mentioned, the pants run small. I recommend getting a size up and I am glad I did that otherwise the pants would have been too tight. The pants legs are straight and fitted, so not as loose as some other hiking pants I own. Overall happy with the purchase.

Wish they had better coverage for crouching

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I would give the w’s Silver Ridge Utility Convertible Pants 5 stars if they had better crouch coverage in the back. Otherwise, they’re super comfy.

Poor fit

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Odd fit. Waist was very large. Very tight at the knee and at the edge of the shorts. I had to return them.
