Why We Like The Crankbrothers Mallet Trail Pedal
The Crankbrothers Mallet Trail Pedal is built to deliver the right amount of grip no matter how we send it. From ripping around the trails after work to getting sendy on some singletrack with our gravel bike, the long spindle creates a 57mm q-factor for plenty of stability on high-speed technical descents, and interchangeable traction pads give us the freedom to customize our pedal-to-shoe interface. These pedals get Enduro cartridge outboard bearings and IGUS LL-Glide inboard bearings that are protected behind a double-seal system for smooth-spinning performance in the gnarliest conditions.

…the Mallet Trail is probably my favorite gravel pedal - it adds just a bit more support underfoot to the already great Candy pedal, and the extra spindle length is perfect for those of us who prefer a wider stance. Ease and security of clipping in/out is all in the cleat setup - I've never had a problem with Crankbrothers pedals/cleats, and that's with a 1000+ watt sprint. It's still easy to unclip when needed, though, and they look nice too. Highly recommend!

Race face flats have more retention

You're paying for the color of these. Not sure if all crank brothers pedals are this terrible, as I've previously ran SPD, but good lord these are bad. Even commuting, having the pedal weighted and turning your body to look for traffic will un clip these. Engaging is incredibly unintuitive, again, maybe because I've only ran spd prior, but these require 'target acquisition' and then an extra stomp to get the cleat into the pedal. I'm sure it'd ease up over time, but the retention is already so terrible I can't imagine that spring loosening up being a good thing. $180 well wasted. Even if you're just commuting in these, save your money and buy some nice flats, and wear whatever shoe you want. I've got some new Look SPD style pedals coming in the next few days.
