Why We Like The Portland Select Mountain Pass GTX Boot
The Men's Stumptown Mountain Pass GTX Boot from Danner blends classic lines with lightweight, modern technology. The full-grain leather uppers are durable and waterproof, and they encase a waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX membrane that serves to keep your feet dry, while still allowing moisture to escape when you're hiking. A removable polyurethane footbed offers some cushion on the trail, while the Bi-fit board construction midsole ensures stability, especially when carrying a heavy load. To keep you from sliding around, Danner added Vibram Kletterlift Thin rubber soles that provide excellent traction without adding too much weight.

Narrow toe box for a “wide” boot
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Size Bought:
- 8
After a few weeks and the liberal application of a boot stretcher, it’s fair to conclude that the last on these “wide” boots isn’t up to modern standards. I love the fit of a similarly sized Altra shoe, but what Danner has done here isn’t roomy enough in the toes to count as wide in my book. Otherwise, the boot is very well built with a novel lighter-weight sole but still a welted boot design that imparts classic hiker quality.

Split Sole (and Soul)

I waited for a long time to get a pair of top end Danners and was so excited for these boots. They made it 7 weeks before the bottom half of the sole of the boot started to pull away from rest of the sole. Honestly, I was gutted. These are not cheap boots, but I've bought much cheaper that have lasted much longer. Backcountry has been good with working through the warranty issues, but could only give me store credit. So begins the hunt for a better and longer lasting boot.

Wide feet size up
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- 11
- Height:
- 5' 10"
- Weight:
- 170
Though the boot indicates EE width, it is indeed close to a normal toe box size. In the Danner 917 Logger I wear a size 10. In the Danner EE Mountain 600 I wear a 9.5. For this boot I started with 10.5 and had to exchange for an 11. That said, overall quality and comfort right out of the box make Danner so great. The comments about the laces being cheap are accurate. Not a big deal but disappointing. Not sure how much more weight would be added to the boot with thicker laces but I would accept the trade off. If you like the style - check the boots out.

These boots (and Danner's entire Portland Select collection) are incredibly well made, and can literally last a lifetime if you treat them right. If you tromp around in these things as much as I do, innevitably the outsole of the boot will wear out before the leather in the upper does. The beatiful thing about these is that you can have them resoled by Danner! I love the unique character that the leather develops after many many uses (not to mention the custom fit), and these boots will remain as some of my favorites until I am too old to walk- at which time I will likely have them mounted/framed so they can hang in my house. I did find these run a little big, I sized down a half size.

Simply put - Danner makes great shoes

I have had several pairs of Danner shoes and all have been excellent quality. I decided to try the Mountain Pass after much internal debate...price vs quality...vs price. Backcounty was the only company where I found the Brown color in my size. I placed the order, boots arrive quickly and I have been wearing them everyday. It took about 2 weeks to break in and become more supple. However, they are great boots for everyday work. I work in a manufacturing environment but am required to dress for business. The boots help me accomplish that requirement. I can wear them with khakis and not be nervous when venturing outside my office onto the manufacturing floor.
