Why We Like The Deuter Guide 34+8L Backpack

Made for serious mountain play, the Deuter Guide 34+8L Backpack packs in plenty of features for our ski tours, climbs, and mountaineering expeditions. Lighter than its predecessor, the Guide remains a sturdy pack with nylon ripstop for durability and a V-frame Alpine Back System that shifts the load onto our hips for safe carry. We like the close-to-back fit for the best balance and performance when we're climbing and also like the new J-shaped zipper, which gives us easy front panel access to all our gear. The 38-liter capacity is perfect for all-mountain pursuits with additional storage available, thanks to the extendable lid and external attachments for our helmet, ice axe, trekking poles, and skis.

Great bag- first impressions

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
Large

I bought this bag to start my journey as an amateur mountaineer and I am impressed with it’s usefulness. Full disclosure, I have only taken this on one beginner mountaineering route but I used it well. It was snowing and foggy for about 6 hours of the route and my gear stayed dry. I fell back on it and no tears. It was definitely my best piece of kit and my hiking pals envied it. Pros: -Side and bottom access zipper is incredibly useful and makes getting your stuff very easy. -allows for great utilization of the space. -allows access to gear without dumping things held in place by the top -top strap zipper pocket is large and had plenty of storage for a lunch and snacks. -ice axe carry system works out great and holds secure -pretty good waterproofing -hydration large enough for my 3L Cons: -side hip belt pocket is a bit small. Wish it easily for my phone. -I found myself wishing it had water bottle pockets just for easy access to stuff. Definitely a common feature I missed.

Great for hiking and trail running

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I bought this pack a month ago for winter hiking and trail running. Fits good and very comfortable. Plenty of room for all my gear. Easy to access gear with the side zipper. I am very happy with this purchase.

Needed a Beefier Build

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
one size

I have a pack with this material weight already and its good for snow for light hiking, else I might have kept it. Compression straps are thin and somehow a little wonky. Shoulder straps are very flimsy and the bottom is not sturdy enough for what I intended to use this for. I needed a pack for alpine rock and 3rd classing about. I know that Deuter makes nice packs, I see them in the mountains all the time. A friend has an older "guide model" about 5 years old and the thing is well built for mixed mountain travel. This one is too light weight for my needs so I sent it back tags still attached after loading my kit and hefting it around with 18 Lbs. of my normal gear and a few layers in it.
