Terrible design
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I had the old version of this bag from Eagle Creek and had happily used it for about 15 years. It got a bit torn up and I decided to replace it with this new version. Big mistake! It is so awkward and poorly designed. The top flap is smaller than the bottom part of the bag so even if not full it's difficult to zip up and full it's nearly impossible. Empty, the top flap doesn't even open all the way so packing is a pain. Also, if you use those outer pockets, the whole flap, zip up experience is even more impossible. Unfortunately I ordered this and it arrived days before a trip so I didn't properly examine it before immediately using it and then couldn't return. An expensive mistake! After two long trips with it, I realized it's really unusable and I'm just going to have to buy another bag despite the expense.

Compression straps are garbage
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
4 compression straps on this bag are VERY poorly designed - two of the four straps tore off on the first short, domestic flight that I used the bag on!! I used an older model of the very same bag for more than a decade and LOVED it... but the new model is clearly not made as well as past models. I would avoid this one altogether - certainly not worth $400. Tried to get help with replacement/repair using BackCountry chat function -- BAD idea! Richard G (and his manager Erin) told me Backcountry would NOT help me and that I should contact the airline and have them replace it (and I think we all know how well that would work). Richard told me it was not worth escalating my complaint because I would get the same answer no matter who I talked to. So, immediately after disconnecting the chat, I called customer support (800.409.4502) and spoke with Louis, who processed a FULL warranty exchange in less than 5 minutes. Thank goodness for Louis - I have no idea why Richard and Erin decided to treat me so poorly, but I will certainly think twice about sending this much $$$ to Backcountry in the future.
