Why We Like The fizik X5 Artica GTX Shoe
Just because there's snow and ice on the trail doesn't mean we have to stop riding, and the fizik X5 Artica GTX Shoe is there to keep our feet warm as the temperature drops. Featuring a fully waterproof and breathable membrane, this low-profile winter mountain bike shoe seals out the worst weather yet maximizes airflow to wick sweat away from our feet. The internal speed lacing system and waterproof zipper closure are easy to operate without taking our gloves off so we don't freeze our digits when we need a mid-ride fit tune-up.

Nicely made, with one design flaw

They seem like great winter boots - nice design, quality materials and craftsmanship. But the extra fabric on either side of the tongue makes them unwearable. The fabric is there so the opening can expand as you put them on, then it folds over on itself as you cinch the Boa down. In my case, that left hard, triple-folded fabric blobs pressing directly against my ankles that felt like someone jabbing me with a screwdriver. It was the same on both shoes and the same on both sides of each shoe. Maybe my ankles are in a weird place? (that said, I've never had that problem with other brands of winter boots, so...). They also seem to run a tiny bit large: I'm normally a 45.5 (or even a 45) in most brands and the 46 fit best in this boot, but that falls within the normal range of variation, so I called them True to Size. I ordered the Shimano MW502 (in 45) from CC next which fit great with no screwdriver-in-the-ankle sensations. The Shimano boots are ugly and awkward looking compared to these slick Fiziks, but they work.

Hey I can feel my toes

An MTB shoe that is great when the temps are between 25 and 40F. You definitely want to go up a half size from the chart, especially on a winter shoe where you are likely to wear a thicker sock than traditional thin cycling socks.

I’m a Specialized S-Works shoe guy for both on and off road. They unfortunately do not make a winter shoe and booties are a pain for off-road. I saw these on sale and decided to try them. They are nearly perfect. I’ve found I have to get the Velcro strap just-so in order to prevent ankle rub from the high cuff. While I’ve continued to perfect how to replicate that just-so Velcro strap placement, I liked these enough to also purchase the road version (which also requires attention with Velcro tightness). I wear the same size with Fizik as Specialized. If Fizik improved the cuff even slightly, these would be 5-stars in my book.
