Why We Like The Edge 1040 Solar GPS Bike Computer
We use the Edge 1040 Solar GPS Bike Computer to make the most of our time on two wheels—it's the only solar-charged option from Garmin, positioned right at the top of the line. Even during the most demanding usage, like GPS tracking and connectivity with other devices, the solar charging allows this computer to run for up to 45 hours straight. With more conservative usage, this model can run over 150 hours. Our favorite features include the multi-band that lets us explore far outside of cell service and the three included mounts that let us move the device from our mountain bike to our road bike with ease. The Edge 1040 also uses stamina insights and training suggestions to help dial us in for bigger efforts and race days.

Contrast
Overall, I am pleased with this device. One notable improvement would be to refine the contrast of routes when the screen is set to auto adjust brightness. Perhaps bold segmented lines would show up better than washed out arrows over a washed out route color? This issue is unavoidable on sunny days when attempting to prolong battery life.

Not what I expected
I bought the edge 1040 solar four months ago. It was replacing an edge 1030. So far it’s been problematic. When it works it’s great when it doesn’t it could be quite annoying and time consuming. It does not load my activities to Garmin Connect,or Strava when I finish. Sometimes it takes hours even though it is connected to my phone. It also at times will not sync with my HR monitor or power meter. I’ve tried deleting Garmin Connect and reinstalling it , does not seem to help. I also try removing and then re pairing my sensors. That does not seem to work either. I have also removed and re synced the 1040 with my phone and Garmin connect to no avail. As stated the unit works most of the time but I constantly have issues with it. I’ve tried everything Garmin recommends in regards to these problems to no avail. I must also mention that the solar charging claims are misleading. The unit will charge very little when in the sun directly. It cannot be charged by the sun. You still need to plug in the unit to charge it. The only solar benefit you get from it is minimal. On a three to four hour ride you might get an extra 30 minutes of battery life. Not what I thought I was buying. However I did get it for way below retail because I bought it after the 1050 was released. That is the only reason I am not returning it. I definitely would not have been happy if I paid full retail. Garmin were a little misleading with their claims.

Garmin 1040 Solar
I moved from the Garmin 540 to the 1040 Solar. Great choice. The larger screen & solar are wonderful. Never worry about battery life. It is much easier to read while riding with the larger screen and vibrant colors.

The sensor connection instability is tragic
I bought the 1040 solar immediately upon release to upgrade from my 1030. If it worked reliably, it would be a marvelous training aid. However, it has been plagued by sensor connectivity issues from the start. Almost without fail, for any ride lasting more than an hour, all of my sensors will drop simultaneously after the one hour mark: heart rate, power, and cadence. When that happens, I have two options. Pull over and stop the ride, Reboot, and start a new ride, or keep writing, where the sensors will eventually return after about an hour of off time. I have created multiple tickets with Garmin tech-support, shared dates Of rides when this happens, offered to send the hardware back to evaluate, questioned whether it could have been a bad batch of circuit boards, and I am always told there is an open ticket for this and to keep up updating my software when it comes out. After a couple of years of software updates, the problem persists, so I am skeptical that it is ever going to get resolved with a software solution. This is a huge issue for analysis of workouts and events. The data are completely missing, and skew the metrics. I love the idea of this computer, but I have real angst with using it.

Lots Of Choices
The one thing I have always liked about Garmin Edge computers is the availability to have different screens for different bikes. I have five bikes and each one has its own profile. The solar feature definitely extends the battery life. This my favorite Edge computer, more so than the 1050.

Bugs in Mac Software
I bought a brand new 1040 Solar. Garmin connect consistently gives me error messages for the most recent ride when trying to sync the Edge unit. I escalated this issue with their support team who literally just dropped responding and has not fixed after having replaced the until once and guaranteed that would resolve it. None of their solutions have worked.

Great gps!
I've had my 1040 Solar for over a year now, and it does everything well. Battery life is super (30-40 hours between charges), features a great, syncing with other d vices like radar and heart and power meters is super easy.

Battery drains quickly
I bought this in September 2024. Use primarily for road riding. Have SRAM power/rpm meter and HR monitor running. 3 hr ride lowers battery to low 50%. Luckily it’s been sunny on every ride I’ve been on. But this requires me to run screen brightness at full vs auto. Bought while traveling/riding in Italy so not sure who I’ll contact to see if this is a faulty battery? Switched over from polar products and bummed they don’t share data. Especially since I’m still using Polar for other endurance sports and indoor workouts.

Disappointed
I have had trouble with it and today was a perfect example, it froze up a few minutes into my ride and I wasn’t able to do my scheduled workout, I don’t seem to gain much time with the solar function. I have ridden in a completely sunny day for over 3 hours here in Florida and only gained a few minutes.
