Why We Like The Garmin Edge 530 Bike Computer
We're always a little amazed when Garmin launches a new computer. The amount of information that's available at our fingertips during a ride and afterward to analyze is simply astounding. Nowadays, route planning and mapping, ability to pair with various sensors, and keeping connected with groups of riders as well and friends and family at home are par for the course. These features let us find rides in places we've never been before, allows us to train more effectively, and potentially ride safer. So if you are in the market for a new computer and want the most up to the date features, have a look at the Edge 530 Bike Computer.
This Edge 530 is pre-loaded with the Garmin Cycle Map with popularity routing. Using its Garmin Connect database, Garmin finds well-ridden routes in your current location and even recommends the direction that's most popular. Additionally, it provides off-course recalculation assistance to quickly get you back to the start if needed.
Returning features include group messaging and tracking letting you communicate with the pack without having to pull out the phone from your back pocket. So if the group takes a wrong turn or someone has a mechanical, if you're paired with GroupTrack, it's easy to regroup. It also receives assistance and compatibility with Varia rearview radar and lights (sold separately) so you can see and be seen, while a new bike alarm rounds out the list of cycling safety features. The 530 is compatible with ANT+ and Bluetooth sensors including speed, cadence, power, heart rate monitors, and others, providing real-time metrics that you can view on the ride and analyze later. By paring with compatible sensors, the 530 provides insights on your VO2 max, advises recovery time, training balance, heat and altitude acclimation, nutrition, hydration, and more.
Once connected to Garmin's Connect IQ store which you can do over Wi-Fi, you can easily customize the Edge 530 with free apps, widgets, and data fields. For instance, a weather app can keep you aware of changing conditions, while training apps let you, and your coach, know if you are doing the workouts correctly. Every data field is easily customizable letting you put important information exactly where you want on the easy to read screen.
Water resistance gets an IPX7 rating which is plenty of protection for rainy rides and 'cross conditions. One area that really impressed us was its 20-hour claimed battery life and the ability to work with the Garmin Charge power pack for up to 40 hours of additional battery life, plenty of juice for ultra epic races. Included with the computer is a flush out-front mount, standard mount, USB cable, and manual.

Great Features - Reliability
I have hat it for over 3 years and it is reliable. Recently had a technical problem due to an update and the dealer replaced it with a new one.

Extremely reliable
This computer has held up to many years of travel, racing, bad weather, and mountain bike crashes. The function of physical buttons makes it useful in the winter with heavy gloves and in it’s third year of service the battery held up to navigating a >14hr/100mi navigationally punishing MTB alley cat event, including recording data from external sensors.

Tough to use
Difficult to pair devices, have used for about 2 years, but I have always had difficulty pairing devices. Just purchased a Polar H10 and cannot connect it. I have gone through Garmin hrm which do not seem very durable. I have reset device and now can't pair my varia..very frustrating. Think I'll be looking for a new bike computer. Thumbs down on garmin biking products.

-22% grade while going up
Does great for speed and all other stats except altitude and grade. Seems altitudes is not GPS based and only dependent on the atmospheric pressure sensor. So yesterday it was at 5020ft altitude and the Garmin displayed 3750 ft. That’s a serious error. And on top, the grade while climbing varied from -22% to 24%. I tried to get technical help but it was just out of warranty. Pushed on FAQ on inserting a needle to clean the minute vent hole of the sensor and warned that one tiny error and the sensor behind will be damaged. Or send the unit for a refurb at a fairly steep price. While part of the error is software since the grade % was going down while altitude was going up. That’s a program bug. I did a full reset and the bug is still there.

high quality, strong performance, wonky interface
I quite like the unit. I am a data guy at work, so I really enjoyed getting to know the Garmin for my cycling. I use the 530 for my road bike, my mountain bike, and my gravel bike, and the smart trainer too. It has been able to sync up to my arm power meter, to the smart trainer power meter, to my chest hr strap, etc. it always seems to work. I also like the ability to customize my data fields that appear on the different screens, and across profiles. No power meter on the MTB, no power meter data fields for my MTB ride profile. I just wish the menus were a little easier to navigate. That said, I have been very pleased with the unit. The connect app is decent at reconciliation across devices, I've got a Fenix watch I use as well.

Great product with all the features I need.
This cycling computer allows me to do workouts from a training plan provided by my coach by downloading the workouts directly to the computer through Connect from Training Peaks. It allows me follow my progress while doing workouts in a training plan. The computer records power meter, heart rate monitor, speed, temperature, time and distance among other information and uploads to Garmin Connect which in turn will send to Training Peaks and Strava automatically when setup to do so. It also allows me to upload routes and follow them on the computer while on the road on adventurous days.

A must have
Functional, simple and reliable. the Edge 530 does exactly what you want out of a cycling computer. With seamless integration to the app and quick route uploads it couldn't be easier. Only wish it had USB C (new ones do)

Too many features that I don't want
I have always thought that Garmin produced great products but the Edge 530 has changed my mind! The Edge 530 has features that I don't want and there is no way to turn them off. For example, the virtual partner. I have no need to race the virtual partner but there is no way to turn it off. Another usless feature (for me) is the heat acclimation (which is always wrong). Just recently my Edge 530 will not automatically sync. And, when I manually start the sync, it takes 20 minutes. I have search and searched and can't find a solution. Today the Edge 530 would not connect to my phone. I had to pair it again to make it work. Finally, Garmin should make products that allow the consumer to replace the battery. I had an Edge 520 Plus that would not hold a charge for long so I upgraded to the Edge 530.

Nice but drops blue tooth connection to phone alo
Love my 530 especially the crash detect and phone an emergancy contact. But every 3rd ride or so it fails to connect to my phone. The only fix I have found is to delete the blue tooth connections on my phone, forget the phone on the 530, remove the 530 from connect app and add it all back. This is a total pain to do as you are heading off on a ride and notice it didn’t connect.
