Buggy and unreliable but great when it works.
I have had the 840 Solar for about a year now. I feel like I need it for navigating long rides and it is very good to have when it works, but it goes dark, freezes or simply fails to track distance, HR, speed or the other metrics too often to be used as a training tool. Amateurs may find the 840 worth it overall, but serious riders, club riders and fitness enthusiasts need to consider more professional options.

Returned and exchanged for the Edge 1050
Display is difficult to read in the sun. To fix that you have to adjust the backlight settings, which completely chewed through my battery in a 5 hr ride. Also, the Garmin was in the sun during the ride but did not gain any charge.

Great upgrade cycling computer
I have owned several Garmin Edge bike computers. I started with the Edge 500 and I was blown away by how much data I could get from a ride on my mountain bike. Since then I have used the Edge 510 and 530 before receiving the Edge 840 as a Christmas present this year. Each release has been a great step forward, but the Edge 840 is significantly easier to use with the touch screen and the refined user interface. I enjoy the hazard and turn warnings and I love being able to use the ClimbPro feature without following a course. This is a great bike computer.

Love it
I bought 3 weeks ago and do not disappoint. All features are great, and the touchless screen is fantastic. Great deal.

Perfect for me
I replaced my old 530. This is a definite upgrade. Touch screen is awesome. Solar charging is…ok I guess. I haven’t ridden long enough to see a real charge yet plus it is cloudy all day here in Michigan this time of year.

it works amazing
I bought this about a month ago but there is one thing that I cant figure out. I cant figure out how to make it estimate watts. Other then that it is a amazing piece of equipment.

GPS is super accurate but bugs
First I like the form factor, the buttons and touch screen are awesome UI is fast and routing is great. If I had to do it again I wouldn’t get the solar, the battery gain from solar is negligible, even on 100mi rides. And screen quality suffers from the solar glass. I wish the screen was bigger without increasing the overall shape, there seems like a lot of wasted space in the bezel. Room for improvement: The garmin struggles to sync with the phone after activities I have to close and reopen start and restart the unit multiple times before activities are uploaded. In some case activities aren’t uploaded at all. Other than that I love it it’s better than wahoo or hammerhead.

Same old Garmin issues
Ever since the 520, all Garmin units have had serious connection issues. 530, 830, 540 and now the 840. They all lose connections intermittently during the ride (frequently lose radar/phone etc. connections). After completing rides, they seldom sync without several tries and most often "forcing" a sync several times. Please spend less time on stupid features like pay and group stuff and fix the numerous and well documented connection issues with these units. The display is glossy and hard to see in direct sunlight and the touch screen is basically non-responsive. The solar is a completely useless feature. Again, please just fix the basics of these units first please before offering crap at a higher price that no one needs?

So many features
This is a great unit. The appealing feature for me was the Solar charging capability. It has so, so many features that, although good to have, is a little overwhelming to get yourself accustomed to it. Initially you have to spend a bit of time turning off and configuring it the way you like it. But the unit works great and the Solar charging is a huge plus.
