Comfy, but not really race-y
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I struggled with the star rating on these, because at the core, these shoes are really comfortable and that's #1. I've got pretty medium feet, not especially narrow or wide and my arches are not particularly low or high and oddly I've had trouble finding shoes that fit right. These Giros nailed the fit though. The heel holds well, there's plenty of room in the toe box and the midfoot holds my foot just tight enough that I don't need to crank down on the boas to keep my foot in place. Now for the negatives--This shoe is heavy, the soles are flexy and they're not particularly breathable. They're also a bit expensive for a shoe that's heavy, flexy and not particularly breathable. Don't buy the "carbon-reinforced" line, these are nowhere near as stiff as my previous pair of Giro Codes with their EC70 soles. I'm also struggling a bit with the marketing, why do they call this a "gravel" shoe? Its a great XC/Trail (dare I say downcountry?) MTB shoe, where heavy and flexy doesn't really matter, but its when you try to use them on a gravel/road application that their non-racy nature becomes apparent despite their looks. So anyways, I gave them 4 stars. If you're not really trying to go fast and it doesn't get particularly hot or humid where you live, these will do you well. I just don't really think they're a good candidate for an "N-1" setup where you're using a gravelly bike to do both road and gravel though.

Superb Gravel Shoe

Have owned these for a year now and purchasing a second pair. These shoes are phenomenal and have been used for 7-9 hr gravel rides and long distance road riding. Lightweight, durable, and great adjustability with the BOA dials. Only downside is that they will not keep your feet warm in colder weather (less than 45F). So if you ride these in cold climates make sure you test fit with thicker socks.

It took a while and many returns later, I have at long last found a very comfortable and well made MTB shoe! First off, there are no pressure points on my foot with this shoe. This, in and of itself, is minor miracle for me. Just comfort all the way around. It has a snug fit yet also has some give in the material, making it kind of move with your foot. The BOA system works well and is quick and convenient. The sole is stiff. And my heel stays put. MTB shoes are very individual. Many seem really not made well, and most have been uncomfortable. I tried Giro out of desperation, and now I almost want to buy a backup pair. Comfort and fit is priceless. Typically I'm a size 11 shoe. I went with 44.5 here. I suspect 45 would fit as well. The 44.5 toe box has juuuust enough room but I like the snug yet comfortable feel so will stick with 44.5.

Nice shoes

Bought these for gravel riding. Now that I?ve ridden them a number of times, I?m going to replace my road pedals with SPDs so I can use them for road too. First, the BOAs. Superb. easy on, easy adjusting, easy off. Careful, its easy to overtighten, but a snap to fix on the fly. Second, fit. My old Giros were 44s, so I ordered 44s. These shoes have a very roomy toe box, they kinda seemed too big at first but they weren?t. Even with my duck shaped feet my toes have some wiggle room, but the shoes still feel snug enough so they don?t slip. I will use these for the winter and maybe try some 43.5s for thin sock weather. That roomy toe box keep feet warm when its cold, too tight means cold feet. Third, the materials. Though the uppers seem thin, my feet have been as warm as any shoe I have ridden. lastly, the look. These are some beautiful shoes, if shoes can be beautiful.

good shoe - no doubts

I wear Giro road shoes, and I needed new XC MTB shoes. I was not sure about the fabric construction and some other reviews were very good for this newer shoe. I have to report, the fit is similar to the GIRO Empire road shoes, with just a little more room in the front. I wear a Giro 46, and in running shoes I wear an 11.5. This shoe is very comfortable out of the box, no joke. I am happy to have made this purchase, and thank you Giro. You can not go wrong, basic shoe with two BOAs.
