The warmest so far within my budget!

These were found online and on sale at a great price. They are the warmest pair I have purchased to date. They are very warm down to the mid 30's but below that I use Hot Hands in the glove or a liner and when temps are down around zero I need both. They are very comfortable and soft and very well made. I bought them a little larger than normal so that my thumbs could fit into the mitt part of the glove if needed as my thumbs get cold first. I am into my 70's but very fit for my age but cold may be affecting me more than what younger people may experience. From what I have found anything warmer would cost big bucks and might add more bulk than I'm comfortable with. These are an excellent compromise.

Quality; not warm for cold hands, part 1

I have owned Hestra army leather extreme mitts for a good part of the 2024-25 winter season here in Minnesota. I like the mitts overall. From what I have experienced so far, they are good quality and well-designed. However, they are not as warm as I sometimes need. I hope this review is of benefit to people who need very warm mitts. I have Raynaud's, a not rare inherited condition where the body limits circulation to the extremities in cold weather, resulting in "cold hands". When the weather dips below about 15-22 degrees (depending on how much I wish to put up with), I have found that they do not offer satisfactory warmth without an additional inner layer of insulation (which may require a larger mitt size). Now that I am more familiar with mitts, I realize that there are warmer mitts on the market. I recently received Black Diamond's absolute mitts. Using them on a 3-degree day for 2+ hrs, my hands not only never felt cold, but were sweating. Some people have had trouble with the construction of the absolute mitts; in my opinion, they are not as carefully designed as the extreme mitt (e.g., excessively long fingers that are too narrow at the tips; some people have had problems with the liners), and their help line is not as good. But they are warmer, hands down. Generally, the other very warm mitts are at least as expensive as the Hestra extreme. They have Gore-tex moisture protection, unlike the extreme. I've found that, among better mitts, the weight of a mitt is a rough indication of its warmth, and is a useful metric if one cannot try on the mitt oneself. For comparison, these are a number of well-known mitts on the market, together with their weights (for a pair). I also give the listed prices, although at the right time of year, they can cost considerably less. REI gauntlet GTX mitts: list $84.95. Weight 216g for XL size. Black Diamond Mercury mitts: list $119.95. Weight 268g on Black Diamond's site for an unlisted size. Unlike the GTX mitts, the liner is removable. I haven't tried these, but my impression is that they are at least somewhat warmer than the GTX mitts. Hestra army leather extreme mitts: list $175.00. Weight 334g for size 10. Hestra does not list mitt weights on their site. Outdoor Research Alti II mitts: list $209.00. Weight 349g on Outdoor Research site for an unlisted size. OR makes strong claims for their warmth. Marmot 8000m mitts: list $275.00, although these can be heavily discounted. Weight 310g for size M on Marmot site. Marmot makes strong claims for their warmth. Black Diamond absolute mitts: list $269.95. Weight 424g on Black Diamond's site for an unlisted size; my size XL weigh 444g. BD makes strong claims for their warmth; various reviews and my experience support this. Hestra army leather expedition mitts: list 300 euros. Weight ?? These are advertised as Hestra's warmest mitts. Based on the price, they are likely considerably warmer than the extreme mitt; based on an informational on Hestra's site, these may be the warmest mitts available. Note that they are lobster claw mitts (i.e., the index finger is separated from the other three). They appear to be produced in limited quantity. In addition to the above mitts, mainers mitts (made by Mainer) may be an option. They list at $229, no given weight. They claim to be warm and durable. L.L. Bean retailers sometimes have them in stock, so one might have the opportunity to try them on, unlike most of the above warm mitts. Continued on part 2

Well made, warm mitts.

Bought a little extra big so I could wear my wool liner gloves for those extra cold days in the ski hill. Had em out twice in the mid-teens and my hands which are very susceptible to the cold stayed nice n toasty. A little bit of a hassle to get them through the straps on my ski poles, but gripping the polls once they’re through is not a problem Would definitely recommend this for those like me who suffer from cold hands, but still want to hit the hill

Thumb got cold

Was hoping these would be my go-to mittens to keep my hands warm in basically any condition. First day I wore them was during an outdoor stroll in 17* F. Thumbs got cold within 30mins and was cold the rest of the evening. Palm and fingers were fine but thumbs got cold. So returning them.

I’ve worn these for 2 seasons going into my third and they’ve been incredible. I’ve worn these on -18F days in the NH backcountry and didn’t have problems. If you have issues with cold hands, these are the one stop shop. If you don’t need dexterity and you just want WARM; look no further.

Kind of amazing

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

My hands tend to run cold and I've worn these for 2 seasons in Utah (approx 80 days out) and they're amazing. My hands are always warm in them even if the outer shell might be a little frozen or moist. You'll likely end up sweating in these but the liners wick away moisture so well that it doesn't really matter, they'll dry up before your hands have a chance to get cold. They might seem like overkill for most locations in the USA, but I think they work well.
