Finally a Hoka that fits me
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- 12
Usually hoka shoes have far too narrow of a toe box but there are perfect. Roomy without being sloppy. They do run a little warm is my only gripe.

my favorite of all my Hokas
I stopped buying the Hoka trail shoes because they were too heavy. I just bought the regular road shoes for years. Then I found these and they are light and yet stable enough. I love them for the trails.

Outstanding Comfort
For someone who suffers from plantar fasciitis the both pair of Hoka that I bought have turned my everyday pain into something non existent. The recovery and comfort is second to none.

Comfortable and painful
Really wanted to love this shoe. It's super light and comfy midsole on rough terrain which I normally run on. Wanted to use this shoe for ultramarathon racing, but alas, the narrow and pointed shape in the front of the shoes cause my outer toes to jam constantly against the shoe and was painful after just 13 miles of trail running. I tried sizing up, but the issue persisted. If you have pointed feet, they'll work great, but normal feet that splay and flex as you run just won't work with this shoe. Had to return them.

Quite nice, but
This is an early review. This is a good but not great shoe for my purposes: running/hiking/scrambling in the Wasatch over ~6-12 mile distances. The design, materials, and assembly are great. The Mafate fits my foot very well. It looks rad, too. The Hoka policy permitting/encouraging 30-60 days of use is fantastic, enabling a true assessment. I dislike the Mafate footbed. It feels subtly concave under foot. Presumably, this will resolve as my foot pounds down the foam. But it's definitely a subtle annoyance. Comparatively, the Speedgoats feels flat under foot, which I prefer. Additionally, I don't notice a benefit from the Mafate's two layers of foam versus the Speedgoats one layer. Maybe I would notice if I did ultra distances. But that's not my jam. I see why people love this shoe. And it's really good, but maybe not the best for my purposes. Time will tell.

CrossFit crosstrainer
This is my go to shoe for CrossFit. Great for rope climbing, lifting and good support for running.

New Favorite Mountain Ultra Shoe
I have had struggles finding a suitable shoe for long mountain/trail (Colorado) runs (4hrs+). The shoes I've tried for this application that haven't worked for a variety of reasons include: Saucony Xodus Ultra 1 and 2, Hoka Speedgoat 5, Merrell Agility Peak 5, and Topo Athletic Ultraventure 2. I have put about 60 miles on these Mafate 4s on and off trail in the mountains, and they are proving to be superb. The fit and lockdown is miles above the SG5, in my experience. Upper seemed to drain water effectively. The midsole is comfortable and a near perfect balance of cushion and response. I just did a 30mi segment of the Hardrock course in the San Juan mountains, rugged and rocky, and my feet were comfortable throughout a long and tough day on trail. The outsole is the best I've ever used- the Vibram Lite Base as well as the lug design create a very secure traction, felt solid on wet rocks (Saucony's great fail-point). I woudn't say these are a lightweight shoe, yet they felt nimble enough in technical terrain and did not feel cumbersome. If Hoka would lose the debris funnel--the heel swallow tail--which does necessitate the use of a gaiter in many outings, they would really have a dream trail shoe

Awesome shoe!!!
Great shoe. Upper is superb, great fit. Midsole is responsive and cushy. Love the padded tongue. Great traction. Reminds me of the Evo Speedgoat and the 2 and 3 versions of the Speedgoat.

Perfect fit, looks great too!
I appreciate being able to order a few pairs, compare the fit, comfort, and appearance. Making a decision and sending the others back is a great experience. Thank you.
