Why We Like The HOKA Speedgoat 5 GTX Spike Trail Running Shoe
In the early morning hours when the snow on the trails is hard and icy, we lace into HOKA's Speedgoat 5 GTX Spike Trail Running Shoe for aggressive traction that doesn't restrict the natural movement of our feet. The addition of ice-stabbing spikes underfoot keeps us from having to pull external traction devices onto the shoe, letting our feet continue to flex as they normally would throughout our strides. As the miles tick by, the GORE-TEX membrane stops snow and ice chunks from soaking through while still letting our feet feel the breeze, and the balanced cushioning softens the hardened ground and propels our energy into our toe offs.

Hoka Speedgoat GTX Spike saves the day when it snows!
I'm so glad that I made this purchase. They are pricey but well worth it when the roads are covered with snow and/or ice. Excellent traction and waterproof (for the most part), too. The shoe fits well, and is also great for muddy, sloppy trails without snow. My only beef about the shoes would be the low heel cup; it sits lower than I am used to and that's where the mud/snow/water can seep in. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this shoe to any runner who has to navigate through snow, ice, or mud.

Ordering and Shipping is good
The time from ordering and getting the shipment was normal. But the shoes were a present and once opened discovered the pair is too big. Im giving only 4 stars because I have been trying for a couple hours to do an exchange on the website. I answered a few questions and then the next page is blank and says "429 Too Many Requests". Kinda disappointing.

Has potential but had a few flaws
These would've been great to walk outside in the icy weather conditions. The knot on the stitching (and possibly show glue) on one side of the tongue on one of the shoes would rub on the top of my foot when I walked. I don't know if it was just this particular pair and considered exchanging for the same, but didn't want to chance it. I wish Hoka would make the comfortable padded tongues like they have on the Bondi 7 and consider placing these cleats on some of their other styles.

SpeedGoat 5 GTX Spiked Shoe
I am so happy that HOKA has small sized shoes!!! So hard to find size 5 wide. The speed goat GTX spiked shoe however does not come in wide but...I sized up a half size to 5.5 so I can wear heavy winter sox and the shoe fits perfectly, has a good array of spikes and so far has worked well. Good thickness in the sole and insoles, my feet did not get cold in the recent steep hike I did at 18 degrees F and gripped the frozen ground well, except in glare ice where even Kahtoola's were not gripping. I am happy with this shoe

Good, but could be better
Overall, this is a good shoe. It does fit true to size in length, but the heel cup is too big for my heel. I've not had that problem with any shoe before so I feel like my foot is a standard foot. My heel comes up when I walk. I tried the runner's loop with it to keep my heel down. It made a little difference, but not much. I do have a pair of Speedgoat 5's and I don't have the heel cup problem with those. The spikes on the shoe are fantastic. They have been working well for me on slippery/muddy terrain. The shoe itself needs to be a bit lower or a bit higher at the ankle for me as it rubs my ankles wrong. I'd love to see this shoe as a high top for the ankle support. I've been wearing them in wet terrain and in the rain and my feet have remained dry.

Love them, but...
I very much like the Hoka brand. Really comfortable for trail runs and hikes. The only problem I have is it's nearly impossible to wear gaiters because of the way the leasing structure is. Please hook up! Figure out how trail runners can wear gaiters with your shoes
