Why We Like The Hydra Enduro S 29in Boost Wheelset
Pairing the finely-crafted Hydra hubs with the proven rim profile of the Enduro 305, the Industry Nine Hydra Enduro S 29in Boost Wheelset offers elevated performance on challenging all-mountain terrain, but comes in at a more approachable price thanks to the use of 28 straight-pull steel spokes instead of the aluminum found on the 305's. As for the hubs, the I9 Hydra are the snappy new hub option on the block, offering 690 points of engagement that propel you forward with an impressive 0.52-degree engagement, resulting in one of the fastest hubs we've seen to date. They're laced up to I9's beefy Enduro S rim, providing a solid platform to tackle black diamond runs and all-day epics in the backcountry.
The Hydra hubs build on Industry Nine's previous drive system, featuring a 6-pawl design like the Torch hubs, but the drive ring is boosted up to 115 teeth as opposed to the 60-tooth design found on Torch. The pawls are also independently phased, engaging in procession as the axle rotates, resulting an an unheard of 690 points of engagement with just 0.52-degrees between each engagement point. While this provides near-telepathic response when you apply force to the pedals, one of the primary benefits is increased durability. With the Hydra's independently phased system, you have one leading pawl that starts to take the load from pedaling, but because the pawls are phased close together and the tooth count is so high, as soon as you apply torque to the system a second, third, and sometimes even a fourth pawl start taking some of the load to disperse the force more evenly. Basically, Hydra uses the inherent flex in the drive system to ensure that a single pawl will never take the full load, minimizing wear and tear on the freehub body and drive-side bearings.

My "Go-To Pick" for bike builds
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I'll cut straight to the chase, these are the best bang-for-your-buck wheels out there. They are my pick time and time again when I am setting up a custom bike build that doesn't want to break the bank. Here's why. For less than a grand these have the top of the line Hydra free hub from i9. The only faster engaging hub out there has a roller clutch and even those have some wind-up so it's super close form a ride feel standpoint. Are they loud, heck yeah! Unless they aren't because you swapped in some Dumond Tech free hub grease on both the pawls and ratchet ring. Then, they have this lovely delicate buzz to them. Wanna scare off the mountain lions? Swap the grease for the Dumonde Tech Freehub oil and these hubs will sing! I change mine depending on what trail I am riding, who I'm riding with, and my mood. :P Besides the hubs though, the rims have been rock solid for 2 years of hard riding on an Ibis Ripmo. I'm 178lbs and my trails are rocky, ledgy and notorious for breaking frames let alone rims. Sure they have some scratches, but they've shrugged off all but only a few of my worst line choices. With a 30.5mm internal they are great with anything from a 2.4 to a 2.6. The spokes are where the money is saved. That's not to say they are cheap though. i9 used Sapim double butted steel spokes to lace these up. Are they blingy like the i9 AL spokes? No. Do they come in black and you can source them anywhere for a replacement using standard nipples? Yes! Basically, these are a set of i9 Enduro 305's with easier to find spokes plus a minor weight penalty, and they save you a good chunk of change. I love them on my bike, and it makes it really hard to recommend anything else without a carbon rim.

Can't overstate how pleased I am with this wheelset. If you're on the fence like I was for a while, pull the trigger and spend the money. You'll only regret not doing it sooner.

Fantastic wheels. Fast engagement, great quality. No Issues at all despite being a heavier rider and running these on my hardtail. 11/10 would recommend.

I heard so many great things about I9 wheels and hubs that I was so stoked when I could actually afford them. Little did I know these specific wheels with these spokes would be a problem. Apparently the spokes are outsourced and break at the nipple. I have had over 20 spokes break 9n me. Of course when you break them at the nippele you can't just unscrew the broke part in the nipple, so you have to remove the tire and rim tape every rime. So f these wheels.
