Why We Like The La Sportiva Mutant Trail Running Shoe
From mud-slide steeps to snow-covered ridgelines, the La Sportiva Mutant Trail Running Shoe keeps our stride strong and confident. Built with a midfoot-securing lacing system and a strike-stabilizing midsole insert, this pair encourages us to keep pace over technical terrain, while the high-rise, 4-way stretch collar acts as a built-in gaiter to stop debris from wriggling in. With deep, multi-directional lugs and sticky rubber shoring up our footing on slick trails, we maintain power through our transitions and control throughout the ups and downs of our route.

These are my favorite trail running shoes and my favorite hiking boots. They're distinguished by a snug, cockpit-like fit and a sole that manages to handle everything well: the rubber is sticky for smooth stuff and the lugs are aggressive for loose stuff. They really inspire confidence on all but the wettest/slickest/smoothest obstacles. They're not for you if you need lots of cushioning, have a very wide forefoot, or have too strong a sense of fashion—these are fabulously ugly. I'd also recommend against them if you need something you'll wear around town. The rubber is very soft and I don't think it will hold up long on pavement. I use some all-purpose Brooks running shoes around town and on easy trail runs, and keep these for when they count. They are sized small. You may need a size up from what you're used to. Best bet is probably to order a few sizes and try them around the house to figure out which is yours. I did this, and then had to pick the right insole and use a shoe stretcher to enlarge the toe box a bit. But they've now served me well for 3 years. One other negative: the heel loops are fragile. Go easy on them or you might tear them off.

Good for trail runs, but ripped heel tab

I've worn this shoe for 2 weeks straight. 1 week to break in. Then I ran a 20-mile trail run and I didn't think about them at all, which is all I can hope for in trail running shoes. In the second week I started noticing some rubbing/hot-spot on slight left of my back heel (achilles). Unfortunately while putting on the shoes the finger loop heel tab ripped.

Been obsessively looking for a good low top shoe for regular hard trail running, rock scrambling, dog walking, hiking, etc. Over the winter I was using the mid/ hightop UltraRaptors and they are great but not such a good summer shoe. These mutants looked like they could be a sweet lightweight, but solid, summer adventure shoe. Got them and was initially psyched about the look, the soles are gnarly deep, the toe bumper solid, the lacing system a bit strange but kinda cool. Put them on and walked around my house a bit and they jist felt hard. Like no soft heel or insoles. It wrapped my foot tighly, which is great for hikes/approaches, rock scrambling, but it also felt more annoying than functional. Would probably break in a bit. But, over the course of a day and night I just kept putting them on wanting them to feel nice but they didn't. Just meh. Not saying they are bad quality, but the "feel" inside the shoe just made me want to take them off and get into something more comfortable. Couldn't imagine spending all day in these. Well, I'm sure these may be great for some people, but for me, not the "ones". Though I love Backcountry and their customer service is always A+. Side note. I usually wear a 9.5 in most shoes but in these Mutants I got size 10(43) which felt like. 9.5. Most Sportiva shoes feel a half size smaller than say Adidas, Nike, Scarpa, 5.10, etc. Hope some of this helps other find their perfect adventure shoes
