Why We Like The Mad Rock Lifeguard Belay Device
Mad Rock's Lifeguard Belay Device boasts smooth slack pay similar to tube-style devices yet features a camming action to give our brake hand a bit of tension relief when our climber is hanging to suss out the crux. The full metal construction boosts confidence and durability, while its more compact size saves grams and space on our rack compared to other assisted braking devices.

Mad Rock Lifeguard
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I love my Mad Rock Lifeguard belay device. I first learned belaying with the ATC and thought it ruled for lead belay. Then, the safety factors of the Gri-gri made it seem like a strong choice, although a bit more challenging to feed lead. The Lifeguard changes things by providing all the security and ease of belaying someone top rope, hang-dogging like a gri-gri, but then easily feeds for that quick, long-armed lead climber who needs just the right amount of rope in a hurry. Definitely a 9 out of 10. Just because I am not comfortable giving anything a 10.
