The right hard shell for wet and windy

I have had this jacket for about three seasons and have only used it for snowboarding, which amounts to approximately 1.5 years of use and around 25 days on the mountain per season. The good news is that the jacket performs exceptionally well in wet and windy conditions; I was always kept dry, and it is truly impressive in that regard. However, the downside is its durability, coupled with Mammut's relatively short two-year warranty. I've noticed wear around the zippers, and holes have started to appear in the underarm vent zippers. If you plan to use this jacket weekly on the mountain snowboarding and more, I would not recommend it. I am now considering moving to a gear provider that offers a warranty longer than two years and backs their durability.

Solid shell nice features

I’m about 20 days in with this and so far it’s been a solid coat. I only use it for in bounds skiing, so can’t speak to back country, but at this point I’ve brushed past my share of branches with no visible evidence. It’s got a large hood which completely covers my XXL helmet. It was designed to allow you to raise your arms without it riding up, which is nice even when just skiing, and it works well. Understand this is just a shell and has no insulation, but it’s completely wind and waterproof. About the only thing I don’t like is that it zips up from the left side. It sounds strange but apparently I’ve really gotten used to right hand zippers in my 46 years and this has taken some getting used to. Overall a great coat.

Deeply Disappointed w/ Backcountry

Size Bought:
Dec 2024

I’ve been a loyal Backcountry customer for years, having made five previous purchases with no issues. However, my most recent experience has been nothing short of a nightmare. They shipped my jacket to the wrong address—a complete surprise since every other order I’ve placed was shipped to the correct one. When I reached out to resolve the issue, I was met with unhelpful and dismissive customer service. Not only did they refuse to replace the product, but they also showed no accountability for their mistake. I expected much better from a company I trusted and supported for so long. This experience has left me deeply disappointed. It’s clear that Backcountry doesn’t value loyal customers. Proceed with caution if you choose to shop with them—you might not get what you ordered, and don’t expect them to make it right.

I have now had 2 early season days skiing with this HS jacket in rain, ice, snow and wind and it performed very nicely. Like others, I would like another pocket or 2 but this is not a deal breaker. I exchanged a few messages with Mammut CS regarding the hard to slide 2 way zipper. The 2 way zipper is one of the reasons I bought this but I was afraid to use a zipper lubricant on a new $700 jacket without the OK from Mammut. I carefully used a damp Q-tip to apply a very small bit of silicone to the full length of the zipper and then wiped it off with another Q-tip. This seemed to have done the trick. Yes, the zipper is left handed and this takes a little adjustment as well. The color (BLUE) is amazing and also part of the reason I kept this model over the Stony HS.

Great jacket. Have worn it mountaineering and it stops all wind while breathing perfectly. 10/10.

Great jacket, great fit!

The quality of materials is top notch and the attention to detail on the build is great. Very well made jacket. Absolutely rock solid in the rainy/heavy wet snow of the inland northwest. The pocket placement took a little getting used to but if you’re standing around with your hands in your pockets, this is probably not the best jacket for you. The material is louder than expected but after a very wet winter and no leaks, I’m fine with a little crunchy.

Great shell

Coat is very breathable and light. However, I wish it had a little more pockets and was quieter. It is very crinkly when moving, and did not seem to break in much over the course of the ski season. Overall still a great coat but could use a couple improvements!

Burly, breathable, and well designed hardshell

This jacket has so far lived up to the hype. I've been able to take it hiking in New Zealand and around the PnW and its held up well to the rain, wind, and a little bushwacking. It feels very well constructed, and while I would've loved front pockets, the storage and design are well thought out. The pit zips are well designed and easy to use (maybe the easiest out of any i've tried), and offer good ventilation while moving. This jacked is overkill for daily city use, but if you're going up into the mountains or live in a rainy place its well worth the money. 5'11 185lbs in a Large fits very well with a few light layers underneath
