Very good for the gym
If you want a belay device just for the gym and don’t want to splurge on a gri gri, this is the assisted belay device for you. It does take a bit to get used to, but it does have an extremely effective assisted braking system. I would recommend an arc however if you plan to do any outdoor climbing with it.

Device performs well, pays out clean and catches well skills with an ATC transfer well to this. If there is a large weight difference between the climber and belayer where the climber is the heavier it will be a bit jumpy when lowering in my experience. It takes a bit of learning to use this I would look up a video on how to operate it first. Overall a great cost effective alternative to a moving parts ABD.

This is the single best belay device I have ever used both for top rope and lead climbing. The simplicity is very nice along with the added benefit of not using so much energy to hold you climber.

Best Geometry-Assist Braking Device on the Market
I have used the black diamond pilot, edelrid juul, and the Mammut Smart for recreational and instructional use for indoor lead climbing. The Mammut Smart takes the cake! It feeds the best, lowers the smoothest, and is by far the best color options on the market, all at an amazing price. I would reccommend this device to any indoor lead climber!

Excellent Assisted Belay Device
Great belay device no matter the experience level. I normally used an ATC because I liked the feel of how I could control the slack and tension while belaying. I like the simplicity of this device, it feeds the rope well when taking in slack and I feel as if I have all the control when I am lowering a climber, plus the assisted belay function adds that little extra security any climber wants. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to upgrade their ATC.

10/10 Belay Device
I'm absolutely in love with the SMART. It's wonderful for top rope and leading all in the gym setting. I love the versatility, ease of use, and overall feel of this device. It combines the simplicity of an ATC with the extra help of a Gri-Gri without all of the extra weight. The Smart and other passive breaking belay devices are also ambidextrous which means it's great for left handed belayers. I carry it around almost daily for work and still looks like new.

Lightweight and safe ABD
I use the Smart 2.0 belaying both top-rope and lead climbing. I really like how light it is, especially on a day that has a long approach hike! When paying out slack for a lead climber, it is pretty intuitive and smooth. I've recommended this to a few new climbers who were hesitating to pay the money for a gri-gri, but wanted the assurance of using an assisted braking device. The gri-gri has more use cases, but a novice climber on single pitch is unlikely to need many of them.

Really great for lead
I really enjoy lead belaying with this. It has great control and it really does stop hands free (I don't do this) which is great for additional safety. It is not as smooth as a Gri-Gri for top-rope but it is definitely good enough. I have a Gri-Gri and I still use the smart 90% of time. The 4 stars is because it is not super smooth.

Super convenient for lead climbing! Much easier to give rope out than an active assisted device.
