Almost Perfect for My Needs

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

My primary reason for buying this was for frequent business trips to Japan where I often end up in smaller cities with older infrastructure where the streets aren't always roller-friendly (and even when they are, my rolling cases are the usual receptacles for collecting product samples, so I need something to hold my clothes). So far, we've made it through one trip that involved using it as a carry-on when getting across the Pacific and checking it on three domestic flights in Japan, and it still looks daisy-fresh. Pros: Fit - I'm 5'10" with a big build and medium torso and find the fit comfortable, from where it sits on my back to the chest and waist straps. The shoulder straps can dig into my armpits a bit those rare times when I don't have the chest strap connected, so someone like my wife, who inexplicably hates chest straps, may find it less comfortable. Size - Packing strategically, I was able to get in 5 days' worth of underwear, socks, and t-shirts, a couple of dress shirts, a couple pairs of pants, a sweater, my dopp kit, and even a pair of 11.5 sneakers in the main compartments. Easily fitting the shoes in side-by-side was a surprise, since I often need to get Tetris-y with them when co-existing with packing cubes in bags of this volume. The top outer pocket fit all my needed cables, chargers, and whatnots with ease. My big Nalgene bottle would've fit fine in the side pocket but felt like it could slip out (maybe just my paranoia), so I used a 20oz HydroFlask with a boot on the bottom for more security and it did great. And the open stretchy mesh pocket made it super-easy to quick stash my jacket or sling bag when needed. Comfort - The extra weight from the rigid frame is well worth it. The structure spread the weight nicely and I made it through a lot of airports and train stations without feeling fatigued. I probably only used the waist belt half the time and it was noticeably more comfortable when I did, but not so uncomfortable without that it served as a reminder to buckle up. Convenience Factors - There are handles on almost every side and I'm sure I used them all multiple times. Before I bought it, I saw gripes in other online reviews about the zippers and the way the straps get secured when using it as a duffle bag and I think both complaints are way overstated. Yes, the zippers don't glide along without a bit of effort, but I'll take that in exchange for the water resistance, the pickpocket deterrence (since they'd need to really work for it), and what I hope is not a misplaced sense of security that it's not going to spill open due to a weak component. And storing the straps is not rocket science. It's unzipping the sides and connecting a hook that's conveniently identified by matching two arrows. Anyone confused by it might want to rethink their capacity for leaving the house without a helmet or operating machinery like retractable ballpoint pens. Cons: Laptop pocket - The world is not all Macbook users. I have a Macbook that's about 8 years old and it fits fine, if a little snug. Since my real computer is a thin 17" PC, I can't do it all with just this bag. Luckily, that was never my intention since I would have a briefcase or day pack for these work trips, but just know you're not getting anything but a 13" (maybe a 14") computer in here. Tiny Pocket - Above the water bottle holder is a borderline useless little zippered pocket. It's about 6" deep, but with such a small aperture, only my 9-year-old could get her hand in there to dig for anything. If you've got something thin and tall enough to fit vertically or if you've got Jamie Lee Curtis hot dog fingers, you're in luck. Otherwise, prepare to do a little digging and shaking to get anything out of there. Hidden Pocket - Maybe not a 'con,' but it's just so well-hidden that I forget it's there. It's probably more applicable to someone going through a sketchier place than Japan who needs to really hide docs or cash, however, it's still so hidden that I could see where the bag is a little too big for a smaller plane and gets checked last minute without the user realizing their passport is in it. Flappy Straps - The four little loops to help cinch down the pack to accommodate smaller loads do a great job, but then they're just four loops kinda sticking out the sides of the bag. It hasn't happened yet, but I'm sure they'll snag on something at some point. I might add some small bungees across the bag to help tether them down. The waist straps are another thing to flap around since the hip pads make them flare out like little vestigial wings. Forgetting to buckle the waist before walking down plane or train aisles meant I probably gently whacked more than a few people with the plastic buckles before I realized it. Look - I don't love the design at the bottom, which feels a bit retro, but not to an era I wanted to see revived. A plain charcoal accent would have felt much more sleek and contemporary. Price - Matador makes good stuff and obviously it's too soon to speak to longevity, however, the impression I have so far is that the MSRP hitting about $50 less would be a sweeter spot. The build quality and engineering is certainly there and better than the other bags I've tested so I don't feel like I paid way too much, but I also don't feel like I got more than I expected for the price. At $300 or less, I think it would've hit that fifth star with me.

Kicking myself for not getting it sooner

All the reviews are right. It is a fantastically designed bag with comfortable shoulder straps, great carry options and amazing pockets. The only downside is the price and maybe the interior bungee straps. So far I have taken it for week long work trips and a two week adventure paired with my sling cross body bag. I am 5'7" and while it is square and fits all I want/need, it does not stick outside of my frame to bump into things. It fits in American Domestic overhead bins and it easy to grab and slide in and out especially if I don't have a jacket shoved in the mesh front pocket.

Amazing for One Bag Travel

Familiarity:

I just took this pack on a 6-week trip in Asia and it was the perfect one-bag travel solution for me. It fit in the overhead bin on large international flights and smaller local planes, although I didn’t have it completely stuffed. I love all the internal organization, especially the dedicated shoe pocket. And the exterior stash pocket is great for quick access to a rain jacket or fleece. The shoulder straps and harness are very comfortable on my 5’6” frame and the side handles make the bag easy to lug on/off trains or boats. There are pads for stowing the harness and straps but they are cumbersome so I never ended up using them. This bag is the perfect solution for adventure travel.
