Why We Like The Merrell MTL Long Sky 2 Matryx Trail Running Shoe

Made for elite Merrell athletes, the MTL Long Sky 2 Matryx Trail Running Shoe turns up the performance while trimming ounces off our feet. This evolution of the Long Sky 2 features ventilated mesh uppers made from a blend of Kevlar and nylon for a lightweight build that's nevertheless highly abrasion resistant to protect our feet as we rip through brush and run over rocky trails. The midsoles are made from Merrell's premium FloatPro foam for lightweight cushioning while the outsoles feature the premium wet and dry traction of Vibram Megagrip rubber. It's also a vegan-friendly shoe that's made in part with recycled materials to reduce our environmental impact as we get out there.

Heal Cup Pads

Love the Long Sky. This is my third pair. There is now padding in the heal cup that gives me blisters. Really disappointed in this change.

Light, wide, and grippy

I was hoping to get something with excellent grip and perform great on most all terrain and be comfortable. These are perfect for that. Ran a 50k in them and would be comfortable up to 50 miles I’d imagine. Not super cushioned but I personally don’t like a big stack on technical trail running shoes. I’d rather feel the ground better than cushion and not roll an ankle. Only thing is feel like wearing a gaiter will help keep out debris. Depending on what trails your running of course.

Top shoe on the market!

These have become my favorite shoe! I didn't think it could get better than the Peak 5 but then these hit and I am hooked.

Casual and comfortable

Shoes are attractive - perfect with pants, and fit is spot on.

Durable for wide feet

Seem super durable. I have extremely wide foot and usually blow out shoes near arch. So far not a problem.

Very good

Very supportive and comfortable, especially in the heat. After one wear, the reinforced toe cover has caused slight wrinkling and worn the colour off the top in four small spots. No structural issue, but noticed early.

Great Shoe, But Too Narrow of a Toe Box

I wanted to love these shoes because the look, feel, responsiveness, ground protection, and durability are amazing. The ride is great without being too firm or too padded. And they have a minimal toe rocker, which is a fresh breath of air in a market where it seems like every other brand has excessive toe rockers. It's like running with a snug mountain cleat. They perform amazing even on rugged, rocky PA Apalachian Trail sections However, they rub my arch just below the ball of the big toe. I can only run in these for a max of 10mi before I start to notice the beginning of blisters on my arch and my toes start to feel jammed together. And it's because the toe box is too narrow. Please Merrell, please, make these shoes with a natural foot shape and they would be the best shoe on the market. This shoe blended with the foot shape from a brand like Altra or Topo would be perfect.

Great shoe, but derbis is falling in -> NO GOOD

After over 350km in the shoe, it is a great shoe with one major fault. Outsole - The best all-mountain sole I've ever had - gripped while smearing on rocks in Chamonix as well as in total mud. I can compare it to Inov-8's Graphene (TF270), Salomon S/lab (Sense, Pulsar, Genesis) and many others. Midsole - A bit firm but I prefer it over more squishy foams like Salomon Genesis. Please, don't make any changes there. I've done multiple days of ~40km in mountains and the protection is adequate. Upper - great thin Matryx upper with good drainage, it is holding fine so far. I'd slightly reduce the volume overall, mostly in the front part of midfoot (slight buckling of the upper at the end of laces). But the hold is good enough especially thanks to the traditional laces - please don't move to any quicklace-like system. And now comes the big problem - a lot of derbis falls into the shoe around the heel collar. This causes blisters in the heels. I'm wondering if other reviewers have really problem with the fit or if the blisters are due to the derbis. It makes the shoe borderline unusable because I don't really want to stop just to dump the derbis. This issue is both with small stones (Chamonix) or with needles and other forest derbis (lower Chamonix, Stubai, Czechia). Please don't change anything on the shoe except the heel collar (or just make the fit a bit more performance oriented with better foothold). If Skyfires didn't have the same solution of heel collar, I'd buy them as racing option for shorter races.
