Perfect gym pack
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I use this as my gym bag and for that it's perfect. I can fit a 40m rope, harness, shoes, chalk bag, belay device (with carabiner), belay glasses, and a large water bottle without issue. There's a small zip pocket on the front that I use for tape, liquid chalk, nail clipper, wallet, and keys. Getting a rope in there takes a bit of getting used to but once you've mastered rolling it up and sort of jiggling it to the bottom you're good to go. I imagine you'll have far less room for stuff if you're hauling a full 70+m cord. Construction is good. Nicely sewn shoulder straps and an outer shell that has no problem taking the abuse of dragging it around a gym three days a week. There's a small strap on the front that snaps closed (I imagine to keep it from unzipping) and the metal on the rivet itself actually broke after a few weeks but I replaced it with a rivet snap for $3. All told, well worth the $35 I paid for it.

Does the job but better options exist
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
This is a solid and durable rope bag. The backpack straps and accessory pocket are both nice touches. If you just want to carry a rope and maybe a pair of shoes to the crag, and have a partner willing to carry everything else, this could be a reasonable option. My main annoyances come from the bag?s shape. If you fold and roll a flaked rope on the tarp in the normal way (fold in the sides, roll it toward the bag) you end up with a roll that?s the wrong shape to fit in the bag. You end up trying to cram a side-to-side cylinder (the rope) into the up-and-down cylinder (the bag). You can mitigate this with some careful folding and rolling, but even still I find that a burly 60M crag rope (Mammut Workhorse 9.9) requires some cramming and profanity to get the zipper closed on this bag. The end result is a tightly packed bag with a very defined shape, which is rather annoying to fit inside a larger backpack. Overall I prefer rope bags that pack more loosely and then can be cinched down with straps, like Metolius Ropemaster or BD Super Chute. These are both easier to load, and more malleable when cramming them inside a crag pack.
