Why We Like The Mountain Hardwear First Tracks Jacket

When the mountains get replenished with fresh powder overnight, we wake up before the sun and zip into the Mountain Hardwear First Tracks Jacket. The Dry.Q membrane allows us to ride through storms and send waves of champagne powder arcing through the air without a drop seeping into our baselayers. We can venture into the heart of the beast with full confidence in our protection with an integrated powder skirt, helmet-compatible hood, and soft wrist gaiters offering complete coverage for our upper body, and if things get warm, the two zippered underarm vents allow us to keep cool air circulating so we can stay on the hill until the last lift runs.

Not very warm, and not waterproof. Jacket soaks through and clumps the down, then soaks you to your core. Spend your money elsewhere.

NOT WATERPROOF. I bought this jacket to use on cold snow days so i wouldn’t have to wear a down puffer under my shell. First things first, it’s not very warm. I still have to layer 3-4 fleeces and pullovers underneath for warmth on cold days. The down insulation is practically non existent. Whatever, at least it’s waterproof right? No. For small falls into snow and very dry falling snow it suffices, if the snow is wet or if it’s raining, the ENTIRE JACKET GETS SOAKED THROUGH. This means that all the down insulation clumps together causing you to freeze and be soaking at the same time. I literally had to wring out my base layer today, even wearing 3 layers on top of it. Any amount of liquid water soaks right in, I would even avoid walking under roofs with drips of water, or even setting it down on the roof of a wet car. For the price I certainly expected better.

Another quality jacket from MH

I have 5 days of skiing on the jacket in weather from sunny/warm to heavy snow. The fabric breathability is perfect for sidecountry/in-bounds skiing, but a touch heavy if you're looking for a backcountry jacket. Great windproofing while still breathing. I am 5'11, 165lbs, with broad shoulders. I bought the medium and it can be worn with a puffy underneath comfortably. Not baggy, but still free range of movement. A touch more room on the shoulders would have suited me a bit better. There are a ton of useful pockets, no shortage. Zippers are easy to access, pit zips are a bit cumbersome however. Velcro on the cuffs is easy to adjust with different gloves.

Worth every dime….Top quality products across the board. The fit is a little big as I usually buy large, but the med was just right and I could still layer appropriately and comfortably. The stitching was perfect and the look is just what I wanted. GREAT

Amazing shell…Don’t waste your time thinking about it …..Just do it
