Why We Like The Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Hooded Jacket

Whether we're waking up before the sun for an early morning ski tour or bundling up while on belay at our local crag, the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Hooded Jacket keeps us warm without the weight. This ultralight puffy offers mid-winter warmth with plush 800-fill down trapping heat beneath our shell while we ski, or can be worn by itself for approach hikes and route-finding missions. The highly packable design shrinks down into its own hand pocket, so we can keep it in our bag until we need it, and with the best-in-class weight of 8.8 ounces, we'll barely even notice it's there.

Great lightweight puffy!

This is a superlight jacket, but offers great warmth. I appreciate the design details like synthetic insulation at the cuffs and a very generous set of pockets - the pocket openings are wide enough that you don't have to fight to put a pair of gloves in! I've worn the jacket solo, with a vest, and with a shell in activities from winter biking, snowshoeing, and alpine skiing. I'm most pleased with this jacket!

Zipper needs improvement

Jacket fits well and is comfortable. My biggest gripe is the subpar zipper. It is really small and the connections are very small making it more difficult to get put together before zipping up. And unzipping can be a pain as it doesnt want to come open at the bottom. Not the quality I have come to expect from MH.

Superior quality and fit

My favorite jacket I think I've ever owned. Perfect fit, perfect length, very flexible, and almost unnoticeable while wearing it it's so good. I used to wear small but my chest is too big for the small size now, and I was concerned about the medium being too big. It's not, it's an excellent fit! I also love the color combo being unique and outside the typical dark gray, navy, black or one wild card color choices for men. I've worn many of the big competitors to this jacket and, for me and my needs, this is the clear winner.

The perfect jacket for 30 - 50 degrees

I was in search of the perfect jacket for 30 - 50 degrees and I think I found it. It is so warm, yet so lightweight; it's perfect for the shoulder months. I have yet to test it under a hard shell, but guessing it will work out great.

Super warm and weighs next to nothing

The perfect insulted layer to take on long hikes or multipitch climbs in any season; my go-to when I need wind-stopping insulation, but have no weight or room to spare. I love the fact that I can pack it into it's own pocket (tiny!), clip it to my harness, climb a pitch in my base-layer, then deploy it and put it on to stay nice and warm at the belay. It's warm and weighs next to nothing. Don't leave the car without one!

Great jacket under particular circumstances

Not as warm as expected for everyday use (I.e. waking around town, waiting for my car to heat up in the AM). Even in 30-35F days I don’t find this jacket to be all that warm unless I’m relatively active or wearing a HEAVY mid layer. Realizing that this was designed to be as light weight as possible, I can appreciate the sleek unbulky feel though. It looks and feels really good. When wearing while doing something pretty active in the high teens or warmer it’s fine. If you need to pack it, the low weight and small pack size is great. Wish MH had a jacket of this quality with slightly more insulation but it looks like the next step up is a full blown parka. Bought this to replace an old tattered TNF Morph jacket which was similarly priced with 800 fill down but still find myself grabbing for it over the Ghost Whisperer if it’s in the 20’sF. A bit overpriced for how much insulation is in it imo but a decent buy if you plan to primarily use for highly active situations or plan to wear heavy layers underneath.

Lightweight and Warm

I got this for my boyfriend for his birthday. He did a lot of research on what down jacket he wanted and landed on this one. It is extremely lightweight but he says it keeps him plenty warm. It fits snug enough to wear under a shell. He has a Mountain Hardware shell that fits over it perfectly. When we got the jacket in the mail there were a few places where we found loose threads. We cut those off and I don’t believe he’s found anymore. He had to let it sit out for a few days to fluff up a bit after it was in the shipping box.

Best Jacket Ive Ever Owned

For those complaining about durability: this jacket is 8oz! it's not intended to be hucked thru the trees, that's what puffers with heavy ripstop fabric are for, they generally weigh 20-3x more than this jacket. Ive worn this jacket on long, freezing cold photoshoots in the ice and snow; ive worn it boating down freezing rivers at 20 degrees. The jacket is easy to mend with a little aquaseal, it takes less than one minute (not mtn. hardware recommended i doubt but it works for mine). There isnt a jacket made that's equals this items warmth to weight ratio. The fact you can wear a t-shirt in 20 degree weather and stay warm and dry speaks to the quality. I own both the OG ghost whisperer and the Ghost 2 w/hood. This is the first product ive written a review about, it's that good. Mtn hardware. warranty is awesome. my OG jacket needed a new zipper- mtn hardware had it back to me in a week or two, no charge. Buy it.
