Why We Like The Mountain Hardwear Phantom 0F Down Sleeping Bag

The Mountain Hardwear Phantom 0F Down Sleeping Bag packs down small and light while offering big-time warmth for camping in winter conditions. Clocking in just over two-and-a-half pounds, the ultralight mummy bag is designed to fit close to our body to minimize heat loss, with a DWR treatment to ensure the down stays lofty as condensation builds in our tent or portaledge. The contoured footbox gives our feet room to move and ensures our feet stay warm throughout the night, and the draft collar keeps our core warm so we can maximize our rest before the summit push.

Trusted and Dependable

Outstanding Product! Purchased for backcountry hunting adventures where environmental conditions get a vote and have significant consequences when you don’t have the right equipment and knowledge to employ the gear.

The Ultimate Choice for High-Altitude Camps

As a mountain guide with years of experience in high-altitude expeditions, I needed a reliable sleeping bag to replace my previous Mountain Hardwear Phantom 0F / -18C model. I primarily use it in high-altitude camps at 5,500 meters on Aconcagua, where extreme cold and exposure to the elements demand the best in insulation and design. After testing the 2024 version, I can confidently say this bag has exceeded all my expectations. Design & Materials: Lighter and More Sustainable The 2024 model maintains the tradition of extreme warmth and ultralight weight, but now with an even greater commitment to sustainability. Its 10D recycled ripstop shell is the same as the iconic Ghost Whisperer™ series, offering a perfect balance of durability and lightness. This update not only makes it more weather-resistant but also reduces its environmental impact without compromising performance. Premium Insulation: Maximum Warmth with Certified Down The 800-fill RDS®-certified goose down insulation ensures excellent heat retention even in extreme sub-zero temperatures. Thanks to its angled baffles and thermal collar, the down is evenly distributed, preventing insulation migration and ensuring consistent warmth throughout the night. Additionally, the black inner lining enhances heat absorption and helps the bag dry quickly in damp conditions. Comfort & Functionality at High Altitudes The mummy cut maximizes the warmth-to-weight ratio without sacrificing comfort, and the anatomical footbox allows for a natural foot position, reducing stiffness. The #5 anti-snag zipper system makes getting in and out easy, even while wearing gloves. Another great feature is the four-chamber hood design, which evenly distributes down to avoid cold spots around the head. The two-way zipper allows for adjustable ventilation, ideal for milder nights or use in shelters. Packability & Transport One of the main reasons I chose this model is its compressibility. Despite being a 0°F (-18°C) sleeping bag, it packs easily into its ultralight nylon compression sack, taking up minimal space in my backpack. For long-term storage, it includes a mesh sack to help maintain the loft of the down. Final Verdict: Is It Worth It? Absolutely. The Mountain Hardwear Phantom 0F / -18C (2024) maintains the reputation of the Phantom line but now with a more sustainable design and key functional improvements. It is an ideal choice for mountaineers, alpinists, and explorers on extreme cold-weather expeditions looking for warmth without extra weight. For those seeking a reliable sleeping bag for extreme cold, high-altitude conditions, and extended expeditions, this is one of the best options on the market. Its combination of high-quality down, efficient design, and recycled materials makes it a solid investment for any serious adventurer.

Cold weather camping

Used for the first time in Death Valley. Slept under the stars. Kept me very comfortable. Very pleased with the weight of it. I use it for motorcycle camping where light weight counts. It’s a larger package than my summer bay but that didn’t keep me warm like this one.

Drew doing it!

Gold Standard for 0F.

Alaska, Himalaya, Andes- you name it. This is your bag. The Phantom 0F is the right size, the right warmth, and the right materials for the job. I use this all over the world and consider it to be the best option on the market for this temperature rating. Comes with an awesome 3 strap compression sack and packs very small. You can easily sleep in this bag with other things inside as well (ex: gloves, water bottles, boot liners). Great product.
