getting the weight off my shoulders!
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
While training for the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim (24 miles), i did 4 local hikes in So. UT to prepare with an Osprey backpack, and each hike brought more discomfort to my shoulders, only to find out a week before R2R that I had some spine/rib alignment issues causing the sensitivity, and was going to need a lumbar hip pact if I was going to survive. This pack saved me, transferring all my baggage and water (about 10-12 pounds) to my hips. My shoulders felt soooo much better, and the weight on my hips was much easier on my upper body. My only complaint is that all the weight pulls against the waist strap, which has to be pulled tight across the stomach to get proper lumbar support. The extra pull was uncomfortable across my stomach (from sharp edges, not the weight), so I rigged up a pad with a rolled up T-shirt that worked out just fine. By the time I finished the hike, I had totally designed (in my mind) a slip-over pad to cushion the strap from my stomach. Tightening the waist strap is the only way to keep the bag against your back to properly transfer the weight. I recommend taking a foam pad with you. They have shoulder straps (not included, should be) to assist in this, and I will try them next. Overall, I love the pack - I just wish I had it on my training hikes to get accustomed to it - but off the shoulders is a winner!
