Why We Like The Terraframe 3-Zip 50L Backpack

After years of requests, Mystery Ranch decided to build a backpacking-focused pack with its OVERLOAD feature, a longtime favorite from years of hunting and military packs. The Terraframe 3-Zip 50L Backpack uses rigid, carbon fiber frame stays as a suspension system that's both torsionally flexible and supportive of excessive loads, your secret weapon for going big in the backcountry. This internal-external hybrid Guidelight frame allows you to detach the pack from the frame, creating an overload shelf for adding additional gear you can't fit into the pack.

Mystery Ranch Terraframe 50L Backpack

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
Medium

I bought this pack several weeks ago in advance of a trip to hike, camp and fly fish Hazel Creek in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The pack provided plenty of room for the four night trip with a trail weight of about 40 pounds. The external frame and "load sling" make it easy to haul ackwardly shapped or heavy items that would not otherwise fit in a traditional top-loading or roll-top backpack. I found it to be a very comfortable pack, although a tad on the heavy side (5 pounds total) for those considering an AT through hike or other extended trip. Mystery Ranch is known for its quality and the construction of this pack is top-notch: 330 Condura Lite Plus with a Carbon Fiber frame. The pack has three zippers--two diagonal and one vertical. This makes it easy to open up the entire pack or to simply stuff gear in through the top. There is a hydration pocket inside and the pack features two top lid pockets that close with high quality zippers. There are also two open side pockets for tent poles, water bottles, etc. Numerous, extra-long external compression straps make it easy to carry your tent body or sleeping pad, Sevaral webbing loops and MOLLE loops provide additional flexibility for lashing additional gear (like fly rods) to the pack. The pack features an adjustable length frame system. I found that I did not properly adjust the height of the shoulder pads relative to my torso length, but made sure to do so before returning. A velcro backed yoke makes the adjustment quite easy. The frame itself is flat and it seems to flex dynamically as you move on the trail. It has a wide, stiff hip belt that locks securly but comfortably over the hips.

Great backpack

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This is a great backpacking bag. Very durable and wears very comfortably. I plan on using it for backcountry camping and elk hunting. I should have no problem packing in 4 to 5 days worth of gear and packing out any animals I harvest. I like how the bag is designed, simple yet very functional and with it's carry capacity there are no limits on what you can pack.

Brilliant design and a LIFETIME GUARANTEE. Overload shelf can essentially double capacity if needed. Dozens of lashing points and options for useful add-ons. My go-to bag for weekend camping, backpacking, and as an INCH bag. Your pack is your lifeline in the wilderness, get a good one. This is my favorite piece of gear.
