Great coat

When I ordered the coat I wasn’t all that sure I would keep it once I could actually try it on. I had two concerns with the coat. The biggest concern was the hood, I don’t like them. The second was the extra inch of length in the cuff. While I still would like to remove the hood I have found it is more usable than any other hooded coat I tried. You just have to unzip the front of the coat to get it over the helmet and then zip the coat back up, I have not skied with the hood up even at about 10 degrees below zero. The hood also crackles in the wind as you ski. Not cool. So I am looking into having the hood removed after the ski season ends. The cuffs on the other hand have turned out to be brilliant. They can be adjusted large enough to go over the gauntlet on a glove if you are in wet snow or rain. This allows the water to run over the glove instead of into the glove. Conversely, the cuff can be adjusted small enough to go inside the gauntlet if it is just cold out. The pockets and zippers all seem to be just right and work well. The extra warmth associated with the insulation has been very welcome. This is one of the first gore-Tex coats I have seen that had insulation in them. Generally it has been stated the breathability of the gore-Tex would be compromised with insulation. That doesn’t seem to be the case with this coat. I purchased the orange colored coat and have received quite a few compliments on the color and fit of the coat. On another note Norrona is using a PFAS free gore-tex. PFAS are a forever chemical and I say good for Norrona. The down side is that grease from the chairlift cable will stick to the coat. I have found using Oxy-Clean on the grease and a liquid detergent, that the grease comes out very easily when run through the washing machine. Just follow the washing instructions found on the label on the coat. It also hasn’t affected the color of the coat. A small inconvenience for the environment.

As usual Norrona puts out a great piece of gear. Quality, materials, fit all up to typical Norrona standards but the jacket is not perfect. This jacket is warm, wind proof, and relatively light, it's not a shell keep in mind. A common issue even with high quality jackets is the hood. Norrona normally gets this correct but not this time. I wear a medium sized helmet however the hood and neck opening is too small for freedom of movement when needed during a storm. This is a common problem for many makers, usually not with Norrona except in this case. The wrist closure is well thought out however the Velcro closure is just a bit too short. The inside drop pocket is always a nice feature, however this one is a bit too shallow. Other than these 3 issues I give this jacket 4 out of 5 stars. 5'10" 150 lbs. a medium leaves room for layers. Better than most but not perfect.
