Sportsman PDL 106 Paddle Kayak

With the silent glide of an apex predator, the Sportsman PDL 106 Kayak moves through the water with prowess and stability. You'll be at the helm, naturally, enjoying a comfortable ride that's both steady and well-organized. Old Town's Double U hull was designed with fishing in mind, so it won't tip over when you stand to reel in your catch, and everything you need for a day on the water has been thoughtfully included.

Multiple rod holders—one forward-facing and two rear-facing—are there when you need them but out of the way when you don't, and there's plenty of space on the deck for coolers and tackle management (custom tackle box included!). And if you want to document your adventures, there are also two 18in tracks on the forward hull for mounting a camera or GPS.

Amazing Quality

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve had my kayak since 2021. Fishing in it most weekends of the year in fresh and salt water. I have never had any issues. The quality of Old Town kayaks is unmatched. I always have great confidence on the water in mine!

Compact and capable.

I spent about a year and a half living in a downtown apartment with a parking garage. I got into a PDL 106 because I could store it hanging out the back of my truck bed and still park in the garage. This kayak has all the stability and most of the space compared to a Bigwater PDL but even more maneuverability. It is a little bit slower than other PDL models but I have no problem maintaining 3mph, even into the wind. I used this kayak as my main tournament rig for two seasons, a handful of B.O.S. events and many local Oklahoma events. This kayak is the perfect compact tournament platform for those that don't want to trailer a huge kayak. Its very easy to get on to a kayak cart and move around. The PDL drive is amazing and of course has now been proven to be the most reliable pedal drive on the market. I can't think of a better pedal fishing kayak that anyone can easily throw in the back of a pickup.

Highly Recommend

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We bought this kayak for my husband’s boss for Christmas. He needed a small water craft to cross the river for hunting. We haven’t gifted it to him yet but from the process to ordering it to delivery it’s been a very smooth, pleasant purchase. My husband thinks his boss will be very happy with it it’s exactly what he was looking for. Very thankful we chose Johnson Outdoors. We hope to buy one for us someday & we Highly recommend this style & company! Thank you Johnson Outdoors!

Rugged and reliable day in and day out.

As a Kayak Fishing Guide and owner of Paddles and Poles Kayak Fishing Tours we cannot say enough about how great these kayaks are. We have 3 PDL 106s and they have been a game changer. We hope to add another to our fleet very soon. If you looking for a great pedal drive with an excellent price point, look no more. If your in the Hilton Head area, look us up to try for yourself! Most clients purchase one after they have been in ours.

Old Town over Hobie

Tested out some Hobies and Old Towns today. I liked the Old Town a lot more than the Hobies. Plus they are lighter and cost less. Too bad I couldn’t test drive the power assist model, works like an e-bike.

A few minor things, but an overall happy customer

Overall a fantastic kayak with a few minor flaws. I absolutely love the overall appearance, balance, storage, angling features, just to name a few. I had all types of people direct me to Old Town for my new kayak purchase. However, in all my reviews I did not hear anything about the amount of water that would come on to the floorboard while trying to deploy the drive system, even with the aftermarket cover I purchased. I was not expecting it and it was kind of upsetting. Also, only two scupper plugs were provided with it and there are a total of 9 scuppers. I kayak all seasons and don't want a floorboard full of water, especially cold, but I'll survive. Number two (two part complaint): I don't understand why the pdl version only has 2 rail mounts instead of 4 like the motor ones. Second part of this is I had a very difficult time sliding my rail accessories on. It should not have to be a struggle to slide the rail accessories on that are meant to fit on it. Number three: I am currently loading this into the bed of my truck, tailgate down and front in first so as not to damage the rudder. In doing so, I'm finding it difficult to locate a good tiedown point near/at the rear of the seat or rear of the kayak in general. I know there is no way to fix that, but it's frustrating that there is no "tiedown points" near the rear. With that being said, my overall needs and expectations are met and I'm still very happy with my purchase.

Great Platform For Nature Photography

I am a 78 yr old who recently purchased his first kayak, the Sportsman 106 PDL. I was looking for a kayak to primarily use for nature photography. Considering my age and this would be my first ever kayak, stability was a primary requirement. I wanted to feel comfortable and safe, especially with expensive cameras and lenses. After much online research, I narrowed to Old Town and a couple of other brands. I completed my research with phone calls to the brand customer service reps. Ken Stinson was especially patient with my questions, listened to my desires and concerns and offered honest pros and cons of the Old Town products as related to my stated need. As a result of my online research and Ken's advice, I purchased a Sportsman 106PDL. So far I have had it out four times, all in good weather and water conditions. I quickly found my sweet spot for easy continuous peddling. The kayak has amazing stability, allowing me to twist and turn with confidence to get the shot. I also stood in it my first time out and was very surprised at the stability, although I doubt I will stand while shooting. The peddling, with instant reverse allows me to keep my hands free to catch those quick shots. At 101/2 ft, it fits in the bed of my Ford Ranger pickup. My nature photography and kayaking friend has been amazed by my Sportsman PDL. So far my Sportsman 106PDL has exceeded my expectations.
