In the past on backpacking/flyfishing trips I've relied on Drainmakers which did well, but would fall apart after a couple trips. On a recent high mountain stream trip I tried these Orvis Pro Approach shoes and could not be happier. I wore wool liner socks and did not experience any rubbing/chafing others have mentioned. What really impressed me is that when my hiking boot soles came apart, I backpacked in these shoes for 15 miles on rough-rocky trails and they help up beautifully. Soles look great, no major issues. Very happy and will replace with the same - whenever that may be because these shoes are tough!

Bought them for a wet-wade trip to WY. Within a couple of hours, both heals had grooves in the Achilles tendon - not a "blister" but a groove in the flesh. It's been a week and they're still not healed up. Read up on these on the Orvis site and see their reviews - not good and i should have listened. I wore them without socks/booties and they tore up my feet. In the past, i'd wear some booties with my Simms boots and had no issues/blisters. These went back and i'll stick with what i've been using. Orvis' website rec's using some 5 mm neoprene socks with these, but what's the point?
