I’ve been hiking the PCT

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve been hiking the PCT and my shoulders has been hurting for about the last 1500miles with a similar bag made by a different company but when I got the Eja my shoulder pain went away instantly. Wish I had gotten it sooner!!! I really notice the quality with this bag, and looking forward to many more miles hiked with it!

Pack is perfect for round two backpacker

I'm just getting back into backpacking and thru hiking after a long stint of raising kids. In my 20s, carrying 30 lbs for 30 miles wasn't a problem, but I am a (a-hem) tad bit older now. I was looking for light weight solutions that didn't sacrifice creature comforts (life is WAY too short not to carry an ultralight chair). Enter the Eja! It's one of the most comfortable packs I've ever carried. I've got my base weight down to 15 lbs and with water and food, I'm hauling between 20-22 lbs comfortably for a 3-4 night trip. We are about to do the Trans Catalina Trail and I am not even worried in the least about how this pack will perform. My only wish would be that it would have the zip opening so I wouldn't have to take everything out to get to stuff on the bottom. Outside of that, it's pretty darn perfect. I plan to do the Camino Frances in a couple of years and I'll most likely get it's younger sister the Eja 38 for that trip. Thanks Osprey!

Most comfortable pack!!

This pack is so comfortable! I carry around 30lbs on our backpacking trips. The thing I LOVE is the minimalist hip pads. Thick pads on other packs end up bruising my hip bones- but this pack has thinner pads that mold to my hips. The entire pack molds to my back, is breathable, and feels so comfortable throughout the hike. I used it as my daypack on a multi-day trip and it was comfortable as a daypack as well. I love this pack and am so happy with my purchase!

Great new design

I love the new features on this pack. I had a five-year old Eja and it had some problems. All but one is fixed with this new design. The new Eja is really easy to adjust, the straps work better, the pockets are deeper and hold stuff better, and they got rid of the abrasive material on the shoulder straps. The suspension of course is perfect. The only flaw for me is that I can't wear a tank top without abrasion to my shoulder blades. Otherwise this pack gets an A+. One other thing - beware the ordering requires selection of a size. I accidentally ended up with a M/L instead of an XS/S. It was my fault — but honestly the website wasn't clear to me.

My Favorite Pack- I Suggest trying it with Weight inside

I love this pack!!!! I read the reviews and I felt that I have to leave mine as well. Here is the reality, you need to try the pack inside the store with 15-20 lbs of weight and walk around with it for about a hour to really get an idea if the pack fits you without hurting you (but then you really find out the truth after your first trip). The highlights of my review: -Each pack has adjustable torso length :+1: -Pack is lightweight and awesome! :+1: -I only wish that there was a 65 L version so I could bring all the things I want on a trip -I bought the 38 L for day trips and 58 L version for backpacking -Shoulder straps fit me almost perfect, the width if the straps are perfect, I could use a little more under cushion because I am skinny. Everyone's shoulders and chest dimensions are different! That is why the reviews differ. It is not the packs fault. It's different body compositions. My body is thin and the straps on the shoulders and the waist cushioned straps are almost perfect. I could handle slightly more cushion for longer hikes. I am skinny! Osprey Aura straps hurt my shoulders, EJA does not on short hikes. The EJA model allows for an adjustable torso length. That means that it can be custom fit to your back. It makes a huge difference. Also, the shoulder straps on all Ospreys as well as other brands differ widely. This is fortunate because one Osprey pack may hurt your shoulders due to it NOT being the right strap for you, while another bag might fit perfectly. The Aura straps dig deeply into my shoulders. The Eja does not!!! The only way to try on a pack is inside the store with 15-20 lbs inside of it. Then try it on the trail. It will tell you if you have the right pack. After trying 3 packs, this one is very close to my dream pack!!! I just wish there was a Larger 65 Liter one so I had more space! I bought the 38 Liter one for day hikes and the 58 Liter one for backpacking.

Great Sweet Spot with Comfort in an Ultralight Pack

I see there are a few negative reviews here - I wanted to share a more positive experience with the Exos. I am an extensively experienced ultralight backpacker, having completed over 30 backpacking trips in the past three years, including the Tour du Mont Blanc. Not including water I do multi-day backpacking trips with a 19-22 pound weight, including a bear-proof cylinder, and not including water. I really like this pack within the ultralight category. It is in fact light, but not the lightest. After using it, the comfort of the pack far exceeds my experiences with even lighter packs, including the Gossamer Gear Mariposa. The adjustability is very useful. The the waist belt, while minimalist, is far more supportive and robust than other ultralight packs I've tried. The pack itself easily handles my gear, including the bear container which slides in easily. Then it has nice features for load management, including a system which helps you cinch the load closer to your back. And Winter or Summer, the Osprey breathable back mesh is more comfortable than competitors. In my opinion it is a winner in the ultralight pack category for those who would like a little more comfort. Perhaps those who are not experienced with ultralight packs judge this a bit harshly compared to heavier backpacks? None of the ultralight packs are as comfortable as more robust 'comfort' packs in my experience. And ultralight packs like this are designed for ultralight loads. This pack is comfortable with a 20-25 pound load.

Very uncomfortable

I've tried many backpacks and after trying this one on it was great, the back mesh makes it easier to stay dry from sweat and the lightweight is fantastic. However, after my first use I never wanted to use it again. This bag is insainly uncomfortable. It doesn't matter how light weight you pack. It bruises my shoulders everytime and my neck feels like I sleep in a bad position. I've used it nine times so far hoping I just needed to break it in but unfortunately I am left just wanting to break it. I've tried other osprey items and weren't overwhelmed but they did the trick. But unfortunately I don't recommend this one at all

Love this pack!

I absolutely love this pack! I have a mix of ultralight and ""regular"" gear and this pack carry's the weight comfortably. The ventilation in the back is wonderful, and as someone who sweats excessively on trail, it's greatly appreciated. I don't find the adjusters for the shoulder straps to be I comfortable at all; in fact I didn't notice them at all until I was reading other reviews. I'm giving this pack four stars because although it's super comfortable, the placement of the pockets on the hip belt are just far enough to the side that it's a bit awkward to get into while hiking. Instead I've been using a separate Fanny pack for the things I'd normally store in the hip belt pockets. The other issue I have with this pack is that it didn't come with a rain cover. For the price of packs these days, I strongly believe that a rain cover should be included in that.

Not as good as it used to be

In 2020 I purchased the beautiful Eja 58 in Moonglade. I love my pack! So much space for ultralight gear (30-35lbs max). My only issue is my torso length is between sizes and the shoulder straps are not adjustable. I should have bought a size small instead of size medium. That's the only reason I'm looking at the new Eja 58. The shoulder straps are now adjustable, but they used a hard plastic plate that sits against the shoulder blades. I tried it on with only 20lbs in the pack and the plates were immediately uncomfortable. The new waist belt is very comfortable, however they added pockets, which rub the inside of my arms when I walk and they increase pack weight (personal preference). I'm going to wait, hoping Osprey uses something like the Aura shoulder strap slides instead of hard plastic plates on the Eja. If you're not trying to go ultralight, try the Aura AG 65. Similarities with the Eja, except much heavier, and comfortably holds a lot more weight.
