Why We Like The Outdoor Research Astroman Air Sun Hoodie

When the day calls for us to be out in the sun all day, we reach for the Outdoor Research Astroman Air Sun Hoodie to beat the heat. Featuring a recycled polyester and spandex fabric, the Astroman Air Sun Hoodie is stretchy, moisture-wicking, and quick-drying, so we stay comfortable no matter what we are doing out in the sun. The half-zip design keeps us out in the sun for longer, and the half-zip construction and the laser-perforated ventilation holes on the side panels allow us to stay cool and comfortable while allowing our excess heat to escape.

Fit for purpose but could use design improvements

Very good sun protection. Not giving 5 stars because I wish the arms had thumb holes instead of the elastic, and I think the pocket orientation is weird in a way that doesn’t seem functional for anyone. As a field ecologist, I use this when I’m working in wetlands where I can’t wear sunscreen, and I’ve found it to be a very good lightweight layer and quick dry, so very functional for that environment.

Love

I love this pullover the fabric is lightweight and comfortable. I use it for running and often layer the Astroman tank under it. Great for Spring and early Fall. Living in the South it is the perfect weight.

Hate the hip zipper!

Next to loving to backpack I love gear that works for me in the field. I love everything about this hoodie BUT the zipper on the hip!! It caused a sore there under the hip belt. So my question is does OR make a 30 UPF hoodie that does not have it?

New favorite

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:
Medium
Height:

Weight:

This is my new favorite base layer. I’ve worn it on several 90+ degree days and it breathes well, wicks sweat and most importantly kept my skin protected. I like that it zips down in front if wanted to allow for more breathability and the little zip pocket on the side was a nice touch, it fits my chapstick or a couple lifesavers. I did take one star away for two issues, and neither of these issues impacts my overall opinion of “new favorite”. First, while the fit at the top of the garment is loose and true to size, the hem and the bottom part that goes around your hips is tight with no stretch. I’d say this part runs small and it’s going to be the “limiting” factor on garment sizing- if you’re between sizes like I am (I usually wear a S-M) and you have any kind of hips at all, you’ll want to size up to the larger size, otherwise it will be too tight. It kind of feels like OR took the men’s fit of the shirt, put it into women’s colors and pulled it in at the waist, and called it “women’s” without realizing that women also have hips. The sleeves also run long but for that I don’t mind as it’s not egregious, just long enough that it covers the back of my hands/sun protection. It would be nice to see thumb holes added.

Lightweight and effective: highly recommend

I purchased this hoodie for sun protection on a recent 9-day backpacking trip. I bought the light grey colour because I thought it could double as bug protection, since the mosquitoes were horrendous. I really liked how feather-light it was, it dried fast and the hood was great when the bugs were fierce. Furthermore, all the bug/blood/sweat stains cleaned up nicely after the trip and it looks good as new! As for durability and wind-proofness, I will bring it on my next two canoe trips this July and report back :)
