Why We Like The Outdoor Research Helium Rain Jacket

An award-winner and thru-hiker's delight, the Outdoor Research Helium Rain Jacket is our ultralight and ultra-packable pick for an emergency shell that we can stash away for surprise showers, windswept vistas, and drizzly descents. The thin Pertex Shield Diamond Fuse 2.5-layer is surprisingly durable for its weight and keeps our weather protection as light and breathable as possible for our calorie-burning pursuits in the wind and rain. We like other Outdoor Research shells better for consistent rain and downpours, but it's hard to beat the Helium's 6-ounce weight and its packability when we stuff it into its zippered chest pocket to hog less of our precious pack space. The Helium more or less lives in our pack, so we always have easy access to some waterproof and windproof protection on our hikes, trail runs, and backpacking trips.

Ultra light travel jacket

This rain jacket is super impressive. When it comes to traveling, camping, hiking, or even exploring new cities, countries, etc. You can't beat the portability of this jacket. It is super thin and light making it easy to roll up and store into any type of bag weather it's a backpack, purse, or even large fanny pack. Even for being so light and thin, it easily stops water from getting through. I've had zero issues with any type of moisture getting inside either due to prolonged periods of water exposure or leaks through any seals and stitching. I will say, because it's so thin, in colder weather, you would need a warmer layer underneath to act as insulation. That being said, you might need to get one size up than normal so it can fit over any layers you need. Also, if you are traveling through any thick brush or scraping up against rocks, you need to be careful about scraping or snagging any sharp/rough surfaces too hard to prevent any micro/macro tears in the material. Being so thin, it's not super durable, but it's not very easily torn either. Overall fantastic product and highly recommend

Decent windbreaker, terrible raincoat

Bought this jacket through a pro deal program when working at a climbing gym, as I wanted a packable, lightweight rain jacket for travel. I typically love OR's gear (and it's always good to support a local Seattle company) but I was sorely disappointed by this jacket. It packs down small and folds into the pocket, which is nice, and is fairly breathable, but that's about it. The jacket is not waterproof whatsoever- about 5 minutes in normal rain and I was soaked. A thick hoodie does a better job keeping you dry than this flimsy thing. Furthermore, the too-skinny arms make it impossible to put over any other kind of jacket or sweater, and the dinky elastic cuffs and lack of hand warmer pockets make the garment impractical and cheap feeling. I hope OR discontinues it to maintain the integrity of their brand.

Great

Super light and packable. It kept me nice and dry when needed. I found it runs small if you intend to put it over layers, recommend size up over a puffer like nano puff.
