Why We Like The R2 TechFace Hooded Fleece Jacket
Still one of our favorites, the R2 TechFace Hooded Fleece Jacket is a rugged update on Patagonia's performance-oriented, midweight R2 fleece. The original R2 offered stretchy mobility and enhanced moisture management to dry quickly when you're sweating on a rigorous alpine climb. Patagonia updated this R2 with a TechFace exterior for exceptional water- and wind-resistance to shed light moisture like slight snow falling on a steep skintrack when you're backcountry touring.

I've worn this jacket as a mid-layer skiing and as an outer layer fly fishing and around town. Pretty dang warm for a fleece but not too warm as some air passes through. I think it would be great for spring skiing. Fits true to size, layers great over a base layer and under a shell or puffy. Really digging it thus far, here in Utah its going to get plenty of use between October and April.

This is the warmest "Fleece" style jacket i own. I love it, you wont regret buying it. It is a little thicker than a normal one, and works well in the cold. Im going to order another one so i can have one for work. Its that good.

Good, Could be Better

This jacket has a decent fit, is comfy, feels durable, and has a solid warmth level for casual wear, but isn't perfect for active wear. At 6'1" 190lb I wear a large which feels right. It is a slim fit but is fine over other layers and I expect to wear this around town quite happily. The sleeve length is ok when standing around but slightly short when on a bike. The lack of elastic at the wrists isn't a dealbreaker for me but may be for others. The hood is functional but has an odd fit - sitting very tall - and it zips high but is slim enough that the zipper catches my beard. A slightly looser more adjustable hood would be would be better. There are lots of pockets but those are unnecessary for me, I would have preferred if they were omitted if it made the layer more packable. It's a nice layer and I expect to use it perfectly but falls short of perfect.

The fleece jacket size is true. There is a lot of stretch to the fabric. It is warm and has good wind protection.

A Cheap Imitation of its Predecessors

This is the first negative review I have left for a Patagonia product. The R2 Techface hoody is not new technology or design. It is, at best a cheap imitation of those that came before it. The Mixmaster hoody came first with original R2 fleece and every technical feature and fit to make it the perfect hybrid hoody for ice and alpine climbing. Next came the Northwall hoody, also perfect for cold weather days in the cold. The R2 techface has the weakest fleece lining I have ever seen in a jacket. The last generation R1 was more durable and warmer. After only a month of wearing it, the fleece lining is worn and any real insulation is lost. There is no hem or hood drawstring and no wrist fasteners. In other words, the jacket will not stay in place when ice climbing. The Mixmaster could easily be worn climbing in the teens and provide plenty of warmth. It was the perfect mountain jacket. The R2 Techface excels …. maybe on a late fall/early spring pub crawl…maybe. Sorry Patagonia but you really dropped the ball on this one.
