Why We Like The Mach 4 SL Pro XT/XTR 120 Mountain Bike
Built for aggressive racing and riding the 120mm fork-equipped Pivot Mach 4 SL Pro XT/XTR 120 Mountain Bike has us getting up and down the mountain faster than ever. When it comes to cross-country racing we know a more aggressive of a bike isn't going to be holding us back on modern XC racecourses. The Pro XT/XTR build comes with everything we need to get into the XC race scene and provides a bit of extra comfort on the front end to go along with it. This aggressive race bike drops 300g off the previous Pivot Mach 429 and replaces those grams with extra uphill speed.
The Mach 429 SL comes slacked out and loaded with all the proper modern cross-country amenities. It features dedicated internal routing for a dropper post and the DW-link suspension to provide one of the most efficient riding platforms, short of riding a hardtail at least. We use the slacked-out 67.5-degree head-tube angle and big 29in wheels to roll over obstacles we'd normally only hit on our trail bikes. The 1146mm wheelbase seen on a size large bike is right in line with what'd we'd expect from a dedicated cross-country bike, giving the ride a spritely feel all while staying in control on fast descents.
The Pro XT/XTR build is made up of components that are both daily and race weekend ready to get us through our biggest and most important days on the bike. Fox Factory suspension supports the front and rear, with the Fork utilizing a pre-adjusted FIT4 damper made for easy cross-country use. Even the dropper utilizes Kashima coating, meaning we won't be needing to bring it in for service anytime soon. Shimano handles drivetrain duties with a mix of XT and XTR components making due with the watts we're throwing at it. Shimano's Hyperglide II is the smoothest shifting in the business while the micro spline freehub allows a massive 10-51t range on the rear cassette.
The Mach 4 SL is designed to go super fast with its super-light construction, quality components, and efficient suspension set-up. We find that the rear end is stiff when we're throwing down the watts but almost bottomless when we're charging down a rough and difficult descent. Pivot finishes the build off with a Phoenix Carbon handlebar in a 760mm width, great for getting into a strong riding position while the bar soaks up some of the harsh bumps. DT Swiss wheels roll smoothly with the 36t ratchet upgrade while aggressive Maxxis rubber hugs the earth without a weight penalty. We'll be taking this build on our longest trail rides and new forays into endurance and cross-country-focused events.
