Your hand-pump water filter looks slow and inefficient in comparison with the Platypus GravityWorks 2.0L Filter System. This gravity-powered water filtration system is ultralight, easy to pack, and fast. Just collect dirty water in one reservoir, hang the system, and in just a few minutes the second reservoir will be filled with two liters of clean, drinkable water.

The extra grams are worth it
I stare with pity and judgement at people who chose to use hand-pumps or squeeze filters. I bought my first Platypus Gravity filter in 2014 for a Portage trip in Algonquin after my friends and I suffered with a hand-pump the year previous. After moving west I switched to squeeze filters like Sawyer and Platypus' version, or even water droplets, but found that the squeeze filters clogged too easily and the water filtered too slowly. Meanwhile, the water droplets did nothing to filter out all the rockflower. Before heading out on the GDT in 2023 I decided to go back to a gravity filter as I did not want to waste time or energy fuffing around with other solutions. One of the best gear decisions I have ever made. The water filters quicker then anything else I have used (still slows down with buildup but far easier to manage then squeeze filters), it is SO quick and easy to backflush, the clean & dirty water bags are durable, and when it comes time to replace the filter, you can keep using the rest of the system. If anyone says they chose not to use a gravity filter because of the weight, ridicule them for thinking anyone outside of reddit cares about the 250g they saved by using a WAY worse product.

Awesome Water Filtration Solution
This is a great easy to use filter. Coming from the pump filter world, the gravity flow filter is an awesome upgrade. Light weigh is a plus.

I have the 4 L
I have the 4 L and it worked very well even in the BWCAW where there is often fine particulate in the water that clogs pump type filters and accelerates the need to change filters. I like the gravity feed because there are no moving parts/o-rings that might need replacing. I also like the fact that the 4 L unfiltered water reservoir is enough to put out a small campfire. I haven’t tried it but the unfiltered reservoir can also be filled, set in the sun and a few hours later hung in a tree and you can have a semi warm “shower”. The flow did slow enough to be noticeable over the course of a week of use so I’d give it 4.5/stars (not an option in the review). I purchased the 2 liter as a gift for a friend.

Purchased this for a four
Purchased this for a four day backpacking trip in the Porcupine Mountains, and it worked great. Filling the dirty bag was a cinch and clean water filtered through quickly.

Failed, no water in the backcountry.
Let me start by saying I love Cascade Design stuff. I live in the NW and have been steeped in these brands for years. I have Platypus 1 liter bottles that are probably celebrating double digit birthdays. I have always been a water pump person but was sold on the convivence of the GravityWorks system last year by a friend on a trip. I bought one and used it twice, once on a 6 day kayak trip and once on an over night backpack. Both times I followed the instructions and backflushed it. Last week we had a 7 day canoe trip on Diablo Lake and Lake Ross in the North Cascades and the filter would not pass a drop of water. I had the instructions in it and we did what we could but no luck. We ended up boiling water for two days until two trail angels named Al and Elyse gave us their spare filter. I want to love this filter, but it is junk in my book.

So Far So Good!
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
So far so good! Having only ever used a pump filter, it is so nice to fill up the dirty bag and let gravity do the work. Easy to set up and doesn't take long at all to have fresh clean water.
