Why We Like The Salomon MTN Lab Helmet
An ode to those with an affinity for Type II fun, Salomon's MTN Lab Helmet is an ultralight lid that's equally at home slaying pow in the Rockies as it is on gnarly ascents in the Alps. Thanks to the hybrid in-mold design, the MTN Lab has a sleek, low-profile look, with EPS 4D technology that helps absorb oblique and vertical impact.
The MTN Lab is equipped with a breathable, moisture-wicking merino wool lining that stays naturally odor-free even while we're sweating up a storm on an exposed glacier. Passive ventilation comes in handy to keep our heads cool when we're ripping turns through spring corn, and the custom dial fit system lends itself to instant adjustment in case we need to throw an extra layer on when the mercury drops.

Light, high quality, but weird fit
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- medium
Fit is a little awkward, pressure points at front and rear. Probably better for folks with very round heads but I have a fairly neutral head for helmets, so I'm surprised with how off the fit is. It's already wide on the sides, so sizing up is a no-go. It wears well with a hat, though, and isn't uncomfortable with a thinner beanie. It's light and compact (that's why I kept it) and fits easily in or on a pack. It's cool that it comes with ear cover option but it's my skinning and backcountry helmet and only used the ear cover liner once. Some seem to complain about the length of the ears. They're a bit shorter than my other helmet, but are long enough to cover my ears.

Helmet fit perfect and kept my ears warm. The back of the helmet has an adjuster to make it more snug depending on your comfort.

Excellent!
Fits nicely into my large head (size L - head circumference 60-61cm). The fits is good and comfy. The helmet is light and feels agile. The head lamp retainer is ideal for a head lamp or goggles with a minimalistic strap. There are tons of ventilation and there is not a lot of insulation, which to me is ideal as I prefer to wear a binnie if it’s cold and keep it light when it’s warm.

Ear protection is jokingly small
the ear covers are way smaller than they should be. I'm at the bottom of the size M range and the ear protection isn't big enough to fully cover my ears. You can really feel the insufficient protection during windy or cold days. I understand this helmet is not designed to be super warm. But at least make the liner big enough to protect the ears from wind! I gave up on the liner with the ears and just started using the minimal liner it comes with and a cap instead. The headlamp clips are also a joke. Did you even test snowboarding with a light during the testing phase?

An excellent lightweight helmet
This helmet fits me surprisingly well for its intended round head profile (husk prime fits better for my oval head better). That being said, if you're looking at this helmet you're here for a reason and this thing delivers. It is so light and breathes so well you practically forget about it. That being said, it is insulative enough to not have you feeling cold, but helps prevent you from overheating vs typical DH ski helmets. On cold/high wind/ inclement days you will want put your hood up, wear a skullcap, or both. I haven't used the warm weather liner yet or taken it biking or climbing, but for my ski days I am so pumped I picked this helmet over other options. :)

Love the weight, the different levels of insulation so you can swap out depending on the temperature, and feels very solid and good protection not only from the top but also the sides and back. Appreciate the vents for the free air flow as well.

Finally!
I hate ski helmets, tried them all, they either don’t fit,too hot, can’t hear…… If only they could be like bike helmets- light comfy … all the things Well this one does the trick for me, forgot I had it on. I use it with the summer lining and either a headband, thin or thick beanie or baseball cap. So much more adaptable for piste or tour. As a Mountain Guide I’m pretty intolerant of kit that doesn’t work so really pleased.

MTN Lab and Husk Prime MIPS
Salomon helmets have fit my head perfectly and their fit seems to be consistent among different helmets in their lineup. I also bought the MTN Lab helmet, because I spend so much time touring and in 50/50 days with my wife and kids. I could go with just the MTN Lab helmet for everything. It’s light and comfortable also.

Comfortable ears!
Having slightly prominent ears, I have struggled to find a helmet that doesn’t cause ear pain. I’ve just completed a week’s skiing wearing this helmet and have remained pain free. The combination of the design for round head shape and soft ear covers seems to have done the trick. My son wears hearing aids and has another Salomon helmet that works very well for him too.

Great backcountry helmet
Please provide at least one high visibility colour choice.. ie. yellow, orange. For backcountry safety, having a high visibility colour is important for search and rescue.
