Terrific shoes

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:
8.5 mens

I wanted a Gore-Tex below-the-ankle shoe that I can use for gentle hikes and also for bike rides. An important feature for me is cable laces rather than tie-up laces. These Solomon shoes met all my needs. They are comfortable and look good. For shoes, I wear either an 8 or an 8.5 depending on the fit. I ordered the 8.5 and it fit well.

Solid, well built shoe for winter conditions

I bought these shoes about a month ago and have been very pleased with them.

Great shoe but v v small fitting

Absolutely love this shoe but had to send it back because it’s very small and narrow sizing - and I mean very small. It’s a pity they don’t state the sizing in the blurb. I love the shoe though, and will order size 10 once the other one has cleared checks.

Great hiking shoe for the right foot

I have 50 miles of hiking on these shoes. They are a well made approach/hiking shoe. I would definitely consider this an approach shoe because it has the stronger toe cap and the sole flex is very stiff. They have broken in over these 50 miles I've put on them on the trails and just day to day wear. Over all the shoe is exactly what I have come to expect from a Salomon hiker. Top notch quality. When it comes to fit, that is where these differ from other hikers I have had in the past. I will state I am a low volume foot (based on alpine touring ski boots and cycling shoes). The foot entry hole on my pair of Ultra Alpine X are larger than Salomon Ultra I have had in the past. And larger than Speedcross as well. Because of the size of the shoe entry and the stiffness of the sole, I got heel slippage, thus got blisters on the inside and outside of both left and right heels on my first 4 mile hike. This is the first time any Salomon had given me blisters straight out of the box. I have worn them with various thickness of socks, and I still have heel slippage. Salomon are my reliable shoes. I was disappointed, but also see what is happening. Ultimately this is a shoe that does not fit my foot well, and I am a low volume foot. I do believe a mid to high volume foot would work in these shoes with no issue. They design, style, and construction are top notch as I would expect from Salomon. I just will be looking for different models that best accommodate a low volume foot.

Way too narrow

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
12
Height:
6' 3"
Weight:
195

I've worm Salomon's for years, running shoes, hiking boots, you name it and they all fit me fine. These I sent back because they are way too narrow. I think since it's an approach shoe they felt it should fit like a rock climbing shoe. I wish they at least offered a wide version.

Sturdy shoe, same size as other Salomons

Just had these a few weeks. They are the same size as my Quests, XA Ultra shoes, mids and boots. They are a half size smaller than my Hokas, Lowa running shoes and Saucony as well as Salomon running shoes. I bought them for winter walking, daily wear and light hiking through the cold and wet PNW weather. They are sturdy, stable and well cushioned, but there lighter weight options out there if you’re actually going to use them for hard use hiking. I can easily wear a mid weight sock with my normal size. I’m not a fan of the cinch laces used through the Salomon lineup and would prefer standard laces, but am a big fan of approach style, lace to toe.

X Ultra Alpine Gortex

I find this shoe to one of the better releases from Salomon in a long time. I’ve had/numerous versions of the 3D product and found the older releases to be more comfortable and fitting than the newer releases. I look forward to adding more of the Alpines to my collection if they prove out (and if the price comes down).
