Why We Like The North Face Summit Breithorn Hoodie

The North Face Summit Breithorn Hoodie is a cozy mid-layer down jacket for serious alpine ascents. The 800-fill down is warm and lofty, treated with a ProDown coating that repels moisture to maintain the heat-trapping qualities of the down in damp conditions. The hood is helmet-compatible for increased safety as we climb, and the easily adjustable drawcord cinch allows us to block out frigid gusts of wind. The jacket is loaded with practical pockets, featuring two zippered hand, one zippered, chest, and two internal mesh, and even packs down into its own pocket so we can quickly stash it in our bag when the sun starts to shine.

I love the Summit Series line

This jacket exceeded my expectations. This specific Summit Series puffer jacket is a bit more "puffier" than other down puffer jackets. It's very warm and can be worn as a mid layer or by itself.

Downgrade from last years

The NF logo sits too far to the right, plus the cuts of the cloth differ from last years. The shoulder "stripes"go straight to the north face logo one, last years model had one more horizontal bit before the logo. Colour is nice but go back to last years construction.

Quality Control

Long-time LL Bean wearer here. I recently went to my local North Face store to try on the Thermoball hoodie as I was searching for new winter coat. The helpful associate helped me determine that it wasn't quite warm enough for what I needed in Boston winters, and suggested the Summit Series, which was not available in the store. Based on the Thermoball sizing, I ordered a medium online. I'm 5'6", 150-155 pounds, and the small Thermoball was a little too small, so I went with a medium. As of this writing, I have worn my new Summit Series coat about three times, and it has already developed a hole in it, with lots of down coming out. I know that down comes out, but this is an actual hole. To clarify, my three times of wearing have been just going in and out of the house. Nothing physical; no hiking, climbing, or skiing. To say that I am disappointed would be an understatement. I spent nearly $500 on this jacket and it has a hole in it after three wears! Sadly, I will be returning it. My LL Bean 850 down that I wanted to replace, has been worn for nearly 10 years and still looks new. Not a scratch (or hole) on it. And, it costs half the price of the Briethorn! I'm heartbroken because I even ordered additional TNF apparel to compliment it just this morning, and now I'm not even sure I want it. Bummer. I had high hopes for this one.

opinion after using

I have two different versions/years of this jacket. Love the weight to warmth ratio - super light. Very wam and comfortable but, recommend a shell if your adventure will encounter wind.

Quality issues

I have worn the jacket 3-5 times and after the first use I've noticed a serious issue with the down coming out of the jacket. I wear it as intended and have a shell for it but I think it was like this from the day it left the factory.

Light, Warm, & Very Green!

So far, so good. It's light and very warm. It packs up small and it's really comfortable. I just picked it up, so I can't speak to durability over time - but if my previous NF purchases are any indication, I'll be weary this for a decade.

Epic piece of equipment

What an epic piece of equipment. Light, warm, durable, good looking. Fits perfectly. Very high quality. What I would expect from TNF's technical lineup

Mother of All Puffies

This is a beautiful lightweight technical insulating layer warm and compressible. Worn as a stand alone garment or under my Freedom parka. Love this coat for freezing days at East Vail or on the lift at Abasin I'd totally own a brace of these!

Jacket is for the true mountaineers

I had the Summit LT1 and it was the warmest piece I have ever purchased. Donated to the homeless and always wanted another. For the price this is the best jacket on the market. This jacket was worn in -10 degree weather with only a north face hoodie as a base layer. I can't recommend a better jacket.
